WebFeedEncoder: where next?

Hi guys,

Be very grateful for the thoughts of my fellow customisers and anybody interested in customising SageTV...

I must I have been burning about a 10hrs week developing WebFeedEncoder for the last year now.

There is significant download activity but its not huge and how many actual users who knows.

Should I keep going?

Which direction should I take it next (see below for possibles)?

Should I stop because a) no one wants this stuff or b) another plugin does it better.

Thank you for any thoughts posted.

Michael

----------------------------------------------------

The 0.9.4 release means that I have something where I can:
  • Show internet TV via extenders
  • Listen to internet radio via extenders
  • Scrape of channel config from external sources.
  • Scrape now playing text from streams or station web sites
  • Scrape EPG from radio and TV station web sites
  • Directly inject EPG into SageTV without going via XMLTV
  • Schedule recordings for Radio based on EPG
  • Test channels and EPG/now playing grabs via a GUI.

In 0.9.5 (soon) is:
  • Configure your online services menu.
  • Export/import to/from SageTV custom online services property files.
  • Search podcast directories for online services to add.

and next - here are my thoughts:
  • Stream sniffing to find stream URLs hidden in flash players.
  • BBC Iplayer and related sources.
  • Further sites to search for content.
  • Replace VLC with something a bit more stable
  • Show your desktop on an extender
  • Play from your server DVD player to extenders
  • Get it working on UNIX
  • Allow some configuration of the encoder from SageTV menus

DVD from server to extenders seems a little pointless, as this can already be done by adding the DVD drive's root as an import folder, this gets full menu support this way as well.
Configuration being moved to within the sage ui (ar at least a jetty based interface) would be much more 'standard'. No one likes editing text files.

Thanks for your input.

Theres no editing files any more. There a separate config GUI now and an installer.

Still a bit non-standard I guess but some tasks are beyond browser or SageTV config - too hard to engineer.

I agree that some of the config could be done from SageTV though and my config GUI is a "thin" client so all possible.

Get it working on UNIX would be my priority! I have been following your work and it looks awesome, I just have zero time to try it at this moment. I saw your gui and that is a step in the right direction to make the customization and configuration easier since that is what was keeping me away from it. I was also wondering if you have considered making the GUI possibly work as Sage Plugin so I can install it and then configure it in from of my TV on extender rather than having to configure it on PC and then test it on extender Thank you for all your work.

First of all, thank you for the great program that I am using on a daily basis!

Personally, I would like to get the following two known problmes resolved:
- tuning speed optimization (especially on the PC that hosts the SageTV server)
- choppiness when playing back on the PC that hosts the SageTV server (which I managed to overcome at the expense of even slower tuning).

Regards,
Michael.

Like the Flash Player idea

I found your customization while searching for an option to play feeds that use Flash Player. I'm a big NHL Hockey fan and they have a subscription service called NHL Game Center Live which uses a Flash Player. It would be near nirvana if your customization could be used by Sage as an additional tuner to record these live streams.

Micheal,

Great looking works so far (from others posts). I plan to use it extensively as soon as I can get it installed. Please keep up the good work.

I wish I'd seen this ages ago.

I'm in one of the few areas where tv is served entirely via multicast. this means I can just import raw tv, rather than have to bring HD in thru a capture card

love it

UPnP support?

Hi Michael,

Would it be possible to add support for evilpenguin's upnp plugin as a source? (http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=44446). Access to netflix, hulu, etc. is valuable, but playon isn't the most stable for real-time vod. It's actually quite maddening to watch 3/4 of the way through a show only to have it stop requiring a restart from the beginning.

It would be a huge win if sagetv users could utilize playon (or any other upnp server in the home) as a channel source and have tv shows and other media download in the background just as a normal tuner-based channel would record a favorite show.

This is really the missing piece for those of us looking to ditch cable/satellite service as most of the shows watched are now available online.. just not integrated into sagetv with the same simple/automated interface.
Thanks for listening!

I wouldn't have high hopes for this.. neulion uses a proprietary codec similar to h.264, but not the same. So, you'd have to reverse engineer the encoding algorithm in order to decode it.

That stinks, I had actually thought about subscribing to the online one if I could get it to play via sage to TV's

Great work on the rest though.

To be honest, I hadn't seen this plugin before now. I may have to check it out! It sounds like you have poured a lot of time and effort into the project thus far. Congrats on the work already accomplished.

Hi,

I guess it would be possible - though how the available videos would map to a channel schedule I'm not sure.

I think something more tailoired is needed here - an online service you can schedule for download rather than wait while it buffers and watch it. Not sure SageTV includes this model of viewing at the moment - other than manually downloading into one of your import video directories.

I have many issues to resolve and not much time so don't want to take on any big new features at the moment. If someone were to run with it and identified a few tweaks for webfeedencoder that would add value to the penguins plugin I would happily turn them around quickly for the community.

Would be interested to hear evilpenguins view on possible solutions to your issue.

Michael

I'm playing with WFE, it has potential for what I would like. If all goes well with WFE, I will have IPTV service to my house.

So ultimately, I will need the ability to support 4 tuners within SageTV, is it possible the way it is currently coded?

I'm imagining this is part of the way to capture IPTV without the need for a HDPVR. That would be SageTV nirvana for me!

Michael,
Have you updated to support VLC versions newer than 0.9.9? The download page says it supports 0.9.8 and 0.9.9, but not newer versions. I currently have 0.9.2 and can't find anywhere to download 0.9.9 - all I can find is the latest version, 1.0.3.

Still in progress I'm afraid although newer version will work with TV but not with Radio.

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/

for the older version of VLC.

Going to calm down on the new features and have some bug fixing time after WebFeedEncoder 0.9.5.
