Trouble starting SageTV service after moving PCs
I've been moving my SageTV install to a newer PC (still running Win XP though) and although it's mostly been going smoothly I have a weird problem in that I can't start the SageTV service manually, after stopping it. It starts just fine at boot time, but if I try to start it from either the SageTVservicecontrol app or the services control panel, I get the familiar "error 1608 service failed to start" message. There's nothing interesting in the windows event logs, and sagetv doesn't get far enough to perform any debug logging itself. Does this make any sense or ring any bells for anyone? I can't find anything quite like this reported in the forums...
I can remember having some trouble getting the service to work 4 years ago on my original install (it was simply a matter of giving the "can login as a service" right to the user) but I took care of that this time; and it makes little sense to me that it should work at boot time but not later. No antivirus is installed yet. Windows XP firewall is enabled (and probably wasn't on the old machine, but hard to imagine that having an effect). I'm using the most current java, 1.6 update 16. Thanks for any ideas! |

Does the userID running the service also have a password? It needs one.

Yes, it does, and I've re-entered the username and password in both sagetvservicecontrol and the services control panel multiple times. The service still won't start from either place (although, I'd think the user info must be entered correctly as otherwise the service wouldn't start on boot)

OK.. After simply leaving this alone for a day, the problem has gone away. This is exactly what I saw other people describing in previous threads (although I didn't get the impression the service worked for them at boot time). It's a little disturbing, in that I prefer my computers to behave deterministically (although they all do tend towards chaos), but in as much as SageTV is now working nicely on the new machine, I am happy!
