Both Tuners with Dish Network

Hi Everyone,

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I've been experimenting with Sage TV for quite a while, and I think I have most of the pieces working. I am using a Hauppauge HVR-1600 with the Hauppauge remote and blaster to control my Dish 322 STB.

As I've been experimenting, I have the Sage pc plugged into the primary output. After I become more familiar with all the pieces, I want to switch the Sage TV to the secondary output, and re-connect the local t.v. to the primary output.

But, I just read a post that said that if I use Sage, I will lose one of the tuners on my Dish TV STB because the secondary remote tuner uses RF and the local tuner uses IR. That was something that I had never thought about, but it makes sense, and I understand the concepts.

Can I work around this limitation by connecting the local t.v. to the secondary output and use the RF Dish remote to control that connection, and connect Sage to the IR / primary ? I'm thinking just swap the connections around, but I don't know if that's technically possible.

Can I even do that ?

Thanks,

Rog

You don't "lose" a tuner, Sage is just unable to control RF tuners* so you can only use one of the two tuners for Sage. At least that's what those comments are trying to say

It should work just fine, AFAIK the outputs are completely independent. And given is a Standard Definition box, you won't lose much in the way of quality either.

*If you do want to use TV2 with Sage, you'll need one of these:

Thanks for the quick reply.

It looks like I've got two good alternatives for getting this done. I like the option you linked to. I'll have to see where I can buy that in this area. Hopefully it's not too expensive. If that doesn't work, I'll just swap things around.

My ultimate goal in all of this is to eliminate the second Dish receiver which I have downstairs. The kind folks at Dish recently upped their monthly rate for a second dual receiver. Currently it's $5.00 per month, but I think it goes to $10.00 per month in 6 months. So, I'm hoping to go off of the second tv outlet (currently unused) in the upstairs unit to a Sage pc, and from there to some kind of remote wireless connection to the TV downstairs. I haven't researched that part of it yet, but I think there are multiple alternatives. Once I get it working, I can send Dish their second receiver back

When all is said and done, I'll have more money invested for my solution, but it just bugs me when vendors keep jacking up fees like that.

Thanks again.

Rog

It's like $40 or so from what I've seen online.
