sage and the mac

I have setup Sage 7 placeshifter in vmware fusion for Mac ver 3.12 on my macbook pro and it works very well. Also, I find that the http streaming and mobile web option to be very, very nice and convenient for my iphone and my I also run it on my wife's hackintosh dell mini -- and that is playing transcoded live video and streaming a file that has been compressed to an mp4. So I don't think a client for the Mac is truly necessary, as for the DVD option not streaming in Placeshifter or via the http streaming, you can just rip it down to a nice mkv and then either option would handle that.

That's exactly my situation too. Where is the mac placeshifter? Come on Sage, please give us a mac placeshifter for v7.

I think you can't tell. I think that Sage can't tell. Look at my setup for instance, I run a windows server for Sage because I have an R5000 and it requires windows. But I use HD300s on my TVs (2 of them) and Mac Placeshifters on all the other locations (3 macs). I purchased placeshifter licenses which are platform agnostic. They just don't know that I am a mac placeshifter user at all. They can't even tell by downloads because I only downloaded the image once and installed it 3 times.

It's unfortunate that they only have the forum traffic as an indicator. I haven't visited the forum seriously in about a year. I am here today because I finally upgraded my server to v7 to get support for the Colossus. Now i am poking around looking for the mac placeshifter.

It's a good thing i backed up v6 on my server before upgrading to v7. Now I am questioning if I really need to put the colossus in place.

So if the main goal is in getting a Mac client, would there be any interest in a port of TiSageTV for the "Mac app store"? Of course that would still require the SageTV version 7 Windows/Linux server... And I have no idea how hard it is to create a Mac app from an iOS one.

**sigh**

I am really supposing the Macintosh versions of Sage are dead. I haven't checked back in over a month, and there is no change.

Sadly, my testing of EyeTV failed, as there is noway to get live tv to my tv, unless a computer is hooked up directly to it. ah well. i'll continue to kludge together Sage 6 + HD200s and AppleTV v2. It works well

It would be better for SageTV LLC and their customers if they simply stated their plans for the Mac version of their app. It sucks when you're a user left in limbo. At least if they come out and say "nah, we're not going to continue supporting the Mac" then at least users can make the decision to invest in a replacement (i.e. a Windows/Linux machine, or a different PVR app).

I'm actually very surprised that the Linux version got continued support over the Mac version of the client because there are more Mac users "out there", and there is a saying in the software industry: "penguins don't buy software". Mac users do, however.

That said, Apple is apparently giving everything written in Java a cold shoulder with their Mac App Store rules. Perhaps SageTV LLC just interpreted that as a "you're kind is not welcome here" message from the black turtleneck crowd.

Or, maybe the Mac version just generated less revenue as the Windows/Linux versions and they decided to put the porting effort elsewhere.

I would be happy for continued support of the placeshifter, however I cannot see myself ever installing Sage Server on a Mac.

i've been running the Mac version of the server since they released it. the sad part is that it has been bulletproof the only issues i had was in testing the new betas, and the lack of a Mac beta has been excruciating, as i have gotten bored with a PVR that "just works" - my wife loves it though.

I ran a Windows server since the start of v4, and i simply got fed up with Windows issues (that was with windows 2000). granted, i never tried SDTV on Sage, only HD, so i was taxing the Windows machines pretty hard early on...

Linux version was probably continued so that Sage can peddle a license free setup box for clients like hotels o places with similar needs. Why the Mac version is mute, who knows. What is true is that more Mac user do pay for apps. I started this thread 1 year ago, and SageTV has chickened out of a response, which is the minimum I would expect for some one that has been loyal from version 2. I know people involved in developing this software check THIS BETA forum and this topic has been on the top of all the discussions for the past YEAR. It is also the post with the most views and replies in this Beta Forum. So they can not weasel out that they don't check the forums. People have ask straight to support and gotten no response.

I still want an OFFICIAL response from Sage, it is the least you can do. I am no longer updating nor beta-testing their software on my windows PCs for the same reason. I might have to switch to AppleTV.

IMO, Sage has answered this question quite clearly through their continued silence: Sage on Mac OS quite is obviously being left to wither and die on the vine, with no official word or acknowledgment. Too bad.

Time to find an alternative that hasn't been abandoned ...

Two things:

1. Can you run 6.x place shifter with 7.0 server on a windows server? I imagine no but if someone is doing it PM me or something.

2. Plex runs on roku now. Now there is a viable set top box that works with a mac server and on ipads / iphones. No tv but that is something!

Placeshifter 6.x will run on server 7, but most of HD content will not transcode really well. As my content is becoming more HD, this is getting more bothersome.

That depends on the speed of your SageTV server. Mine transcodes everything except some H.264 1080i or 1080p video. MPEG2 always transcodes easily.

The *only* reason I still have a box running Windows at home is for SageTV (server). It's been that way since 2004 actually. Connected to TVs are HD200.

I don't see much point in maintaining the server software for Mac OS since it's easier and cheaper (more tuner selection) to just put together some random Linux/Windows system, but the Client and Placeshifter can be useful.

Yeah, I agree...I have slowly transitioned over to Mac for our laptops, but the main server is Windows based. I really hope that Sage, at least, keeps supporting OS X for the placeshifter.

just one last

i've switched back to the windows server after 3 years of running the Mac version of SageTV server.

sad day, but with the addition of FIOS and a couple of HDPVRs to the setup, it was just "easier" (still working out the intricacies of setting up the HDPVR ir blaster for one STB and the usb uirt for the other STB)
