Proper steps to update v7 on WHS?

So I am new to running a WHS and decided to install SageTV v7 on it. Question I have though is when updates come out for it how should I install the updates?

Just copy the new msi file to the addins directory and install it.

OR

Remove the old SageTV addin first then install the new addin.

My process:
Backup the SageTV folder somewhere else.
Stop the SageTV service.
Copy the new .msi into the Add-ins folder.
Bring up the WHS console-go to Settings-Add-ins
Uninstall the current version. Console needs to close.
Open the WHS console again and now go to Settings-Add-ins-Install tab
Install the new version
Console closes again.
Open the WHS console and verify the new installed version is there.
Go to the SageTV tab and verify the service has started.

That should be it.

Definitely stop the SageTV service before uninstalling Sage via the WHS console. I've found that it will not uninstall cleanly if the service isn't manualy stopped.

Hi Gerry,

So you did upgrade to V7? These were the only steps it took to go from V6.6 to V7 on your WHS unit? Nothing special for the HDPVR, HD Homerun? Do you use a USB-IRT? If so, anything special to consider?
Thanks

I have a HD-PVR,2 x HDHR and a USB-UIRT. These were the only steps and nothing special for anything else. As always, stop the service and make a backup of the whole directory.

Thanks for the response. I will be trying this today. I am assuming that after the steps above you would go to each extender and perform up to the latest firmware upgrade? Will Sage7 start with the proper xml file or do you need to select that on the server and/or extenders?

Good question. You will need to upgrade the extenders to the latest beta firmware. Then when you start the extender and connect to the Sage server, it will still start with the V6 GUI. You do need to select the new V7 xml file. To do this you go into the Settings --> Detailed Setup --> Advanced --> Set Full UI Package, and set it to the SageTV7.xml file.

Well I have followed all the steps above and am 100% sure that Sage service is stopped as well as Comskip. When I try to uninstall version 6.6msi it say "uninstall failed" right away.

I have looked in task manager and sage is not running as well.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Here is what you need to do. Remote desktop to the WHS server. Make sure WHS console is closed.
Use regedit and find this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\RegisteredAdditions
Highlight one of the GUID folders in this folder. Example: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\RegisteredAdditions\{af7c95f5-de36-4703-84cb-abaa7dd71ded} (It may not be exactly this number.)
If you click on this folder in the right side pane you should see details about SageTV. (If you pick the wrong folder you will see details about other add-ins.)
Now delete that GUID number folder.
Now open WHS Console and then close it again to make sure any files were released.
Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server and look for a .dll called HomeServerConsoleTab.SageTV.dll.
Delete the HomeServerConsoleTab.SageTV.dll.
Open the WHS console again and SageTV will be completely uninstalled and the SageTV tab no longer exists in the WHS Console.
At this point you could:
A. Reinstall SageTV 6.6 and call it a day.
or
B. Install the latest Beta of SageTV 7. It will install over the existing directory.

And of course you had already stopped the services and made a backup of your SageTV 6 install.

This may sound scary but it is simple and straight forward.

I have had to follow gplasky's steps (with the exception of removing the tab .dll file) each upgrade of v7, and each time I uninstall, the WHS machine says Uninstall Failed, and has to reboot.

Will we continue to need to do this each time? Is something messed up on my system now?

The only thing you should have to do is stop the SageTV service (and close out the Sage GUI if you had it opened for some reason) prior to trying to uninstall SageTV. Then you can use the WHS console to uninstall the plugin just like other plugins. Going off memory I believe it is Open WHS Console => select "Settings" => Manage Plugins => then choose and delete the plugin (or somethng like that).

gplasky's directions are really more for "recovery" when you don't stop the service before trying to remove the plugin. When you don't stop the service, the plugin appears to be installed even after the removal process. So you have to go into the registry and manually remove some parts.

So I guess you're confirming that something may be wrong with my server...

I do stop the service (in the console), wait for it to report back as stopped, then uninstall the add-in under settings. This is when the failed message appears, and it asks to be rebooted.

On the next upgrade, I will stop the service in the console, and remote in to check if the service is actually not running any longer before uninstalling...

Somethings seems to be wrong on your system. It shouldn't happen every time. What you may want to do is not only remove the Sage add-in but any other add-in you have. Reboot the system. Go and make sure you have all the current Windows updates on your system. Reboot if any get installed. Then reinstall you add-ins. That may help.

I had this problem when upgrading to V7 on WHS as well. Something must have gotten messed up after running the same version of SageTV V6 for so long, it just wouldn't let me uninstall from the WHS Console. What I did was uninstall SageTV V6 from the Windows Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and then installed SageTV V7 through the WHS Console->Settings->Add-ins->Available. This caused a duplicate SageTV entry in the WHS Console->Settings->Add-ins->Installed list. So then I used the ASoft Addin Cleanup Tool (http://www.asoft.be/prod_addincleanup.html) to remove the old SageTV V6 addin entry from the installed addins list in the WHS Console. Just be careful to remove the proper SageTV entry using the Addin Cleanup Tool or you'll have a slightly bigger mess to cleanup...the cleanup tool is only for removing ghost or duplicate entries from the Installed Addin list in the WHS Console and not for uninstalling them.

I have had this same issue when updating to each sagetv V7 beta. I follow Gplasky's procedures everytime and it works. However this shouldn't be necessary. Are we missing something? Maybe this should opened as a bug to Sage?

I'm guessing somehow something has become hosed on the WHS systems where people are having issues upgrading to Sage7 betas. Ever since Sage was available for WHS, I've always used the console, stopped Sage, then gone to the "Add-ins" for WHS, and removed whatever version of Sage was installed. The console closes and I restart the console, then (assuming that I've copied the .msi install file of the latest Sage into the "Add-ins" folder inside the "Software" folder of 'Shared Folders') I just select the latest Sage beta and let the install do it's thing. Again the console will close, and again I restart the console and verify that Sage is started. All done, and it's NEVER failed on me.

Hi all,

I'm just about to upgrade my SageTV v6.6 WHS install to the latest v7.0.16 beta, and was searching to find out exacly how to do it. This thread was a great help - thanks.

However.... i just wondered, in the un-install v6.6 / install v7 procedure, are any settings/favorates/schedualed recordings/tuner info etc retained, or do you then have to pull this info in from the backup of the v6.6 install?

Cheers
