MVP Not playing imported .mpeg videos

I recently split some TV series DVDs into individual videos. Some I have in .m4a h264 format and the rest I have as standard .mpeg.

To make the mpegs, I extracted the .m2v and sound tracks from the episodes, and joined them together as a .mpeg.

These .mpeg files play fine on the server, play fine in placeshifter, but will not play on the MVP, but oddly the far more advanced .m4vs work perfectly fine.

When I start the .mpeg video, the top 4/5 of the screen is black, the bottom 1/5 is solid green, the timeline is all the way at the end of the video, and I hear the sound fine for a bout 3 seconds before it locks up.

Any idea why the MVP cannot play a standard mpeg 2 video? Standard recordings work fine though.

How did you go from .vob to .m2v? The MVP is very good about playing .mpg files so I'm thinking something went wrong with you conversion from DVD (.vob) to .mpg.

I usually use VideoReDo to convert the .vobs straight to .mpg.

There is an export feature in the program I use on my Mac. "DVD Remaster" that exports .m2v and .ac3 files.

I then join them together using a program called "MPEG Streamclip" to join them together as .mpeg.

The conversions are all done very quickly, so its not doing any transcoding, just extracting raw files from vobs and joining them.

Its odd because the videos all work fine on placeshifter or on sage's local client, just not over the MVP.

Two possibilities I would check:

1. There is something about the .mpg that the MVP does not like. As a test try using something else to create the .mpg. I think VideoReDo has a trial period so I would recommend that.

2. There is something about the .mpg that Sage does not like and Sage is trying (and failing) to transcode it to a "good" .mpg. To test this see if the transcoder is running on your server while the video is playing on the MVP.

Ok I'll take a look later. Worst case, in the next few weeks I'm moving from the MVP to a thin client PC. Picked up a nice little NVIDIA ION box for about the cost of the never-in-stock HD200s. Clients seem to have no problem with the files.
