System Messages re: Software Updates of SageTV

I have noticed that you get System Messages when there are updates available for SageTV plugins, but unless I missed something there was no System Message today saying that there is a new version of SageTV 7.

Shouldn't there be such a message?

My preferred answer: No, this is a built in feature to ensure that you subscribe to GeekTonic.com to get all important information such as a new beta version upgrade

The right answer: I agree, it should give you a message. Maybe it does when it's not a beta?

I believe the quick answer is that this is not considered an update. All SageTV contents need to be installed....

That's getting a bit semantic not isn't it? Version 7.0.13 is not an update of version 7.0.12?

I know you can't install it via the Plugin manager but it would be useful if Sage let you know that it was available. I subscribe to the udpate threads here so I get it immediately on my BlackBerry, but not everyone follows Sage that closely. And this update/new beta was pretty important since functionality that some folks use on a very regular basis, namely Youtube videos, had been broken for a week or so.

Uhm, I'm a beta tester for three different products right now and I follow their respective forums for software updates daily. I would think as a beta tester you'd probably be following release announcements more closely than a non-beta tester. But maybe that's just me.

That's true for now but once Sage7 exits beta there will be a lot of folks using the product that never visit these forums. They still might be interested to know that a new version has been released.

Since we're talking about Beta here it is sort of on us as beta testers to keep up with things. But, I think it would be great if they add a message that an update is available... To me its not a must-have, but would be a nice-to-have addition.

Don't all registered users get an email from Marketing when a new version is released?

Plus as you already noted, you can subscribe to the Beta announcement thread for email notifications of Beta releases.

I'm not opposed to the idea of a software update system message (assuming it's cheap to implement). But I personally don't see a lot of value to it if I can't actually do the update from within the Sage UI and I'm going to find out about it anyway through some other channel, at a time when it's not going to interrupt my TV watching.

I noticed that the System Message does show STV updates so maybe new versions will show up after the beta period ends. Here is a message that came through today: An STV update from version '2010080201' to version '2010080901' is available.

The v7.0.15.6 STV update adds system message notifications for new versions of SageTV and new HD100/200 firmware versions.

Go to Detailed Setup -> Advanced -> Automatic Update Checks for some new update/notification options. You can choose whether to have online video updates automatically installed (you won't get those updates if you disable automatic installation) and whether to be notified when new STV, SageTV installer, or extender firmware versions are available. If you enable notifications, you can choose whether to be notified of new beta releases.

These checks are performed once per day after a jump to the Main Menu.

Please install this STV update so you can test the new system messages when the next beta installer or firmware versions are released.
