1st 400Gb IDE shipping...
Good news, need lots of storage? Hitachi has begun shipping 3.5" 7200rpm 400Gb SATA150 and PATA100 HDs. Price is big too, lists around $400. I'd expect the competition to soon come out with their versions and prices to become more competitive in the not to distant future. Here's a review...

Partition Tables on MBR and GUID disks Master boot record (MBR) disks use both basic and dynamic volumes. Because partition tables on MBR disks support partition sizes only up to 2 terabytes, you must use dynamic volumes to create NTFS volumes over 2 terabytes. Windows Server 2003 manages dynamic volumes in a special database instead of in the partition table; therefore dynamic volumes are not subject to the 2-terabyte physical limit imposed by the partition table. Dynamic NTFS volumes can be as large as the maximum volume size supported by NTFS. Itanium-based computers that use GUID partition table (GPT) disks also support NTFS volumes larger than 2 terabytes. So you see in therefore dynamic volumes can be up to 256 terabytes from MS doc's. According to this page all Win 2000+ OSs can go to 256TB via dynamic disks. Besides, I've got a copy of Window Server 2003 being a student and having access to a bunch of SW via the MSDN Academic Alliance.
Right now (assuming you can find 7k400s for $400) it would be $5500 to have 4.4TB of RAID 5 today. Throw the card/drives in a spare PC, or I could build a nice one for about $500. That's still quite expensive, and I don't need 4TB yet. What I will probably do is to build my server with the 9500-12 and 3-4 400GBs and then grow the array as I need more space. No one ever said it would be cheap, but that's what it will take to set up my own personal VOD setup. |
