Linux would be a problem for the browser based silverlight player, but OSX and Windows shouldn't be too tough provided the embedded browser is Mozilla or WebKit based. |

I heard Moonlight is a siverlight replacement? I just heard the name last week but I don't know anything bout it.

Unfortunately, Moonlight does not support the Playready DRM necessary.

The Roku player and others, plus the TVs aren't running Windows or Silverlight so getting it to play on the extenders should not be insurmountable.

Yes. If SageTV were a Netflix Branded Partner, they would have access to the same Playready DRM that Roku has, but only for use in something like an extender, not a linux PC client (though there doesn't appear to be one for SageTV anyway).

If this is indeed Netflix's stance I completely don't understand it. Why not open up the API to as many hardware makers as possible to potentially gain even more (Netflix) customers? Sage would have to do all the development, right, so it wouldn't cost Netflix anything??

Even Fly-By-Night Inc could sell enough "half-baked" units to meet the current "standard" if their hardware is cheap enough. The standard should be an established company with a track record of making good hardware and software with many loyal customers which Sage should be able to meet/prove...

(This, however, leaves the hack that is Boxee -- a Netflix Branded Partner -- as a contradiction to Netflix's position on quality control.) Last edited by brainbone; 10-28-2010 at 12:36 PM. |

Since SageTV has a Play Ready licence I would take that as a step in the right direction to native netflix support. Maybe they are waiting to get v7 official before working on netflix support. With hulu and netflix being so important to so many people in the htpc, or even home theater world I see sage getting support for both one way or another. Playon is a "hack" in a sense, but it works. Not at the quality that I'd like, but that is playon, not sage. Who knows what sage has around the corner? We didn't know about v7 until it was released in beta, and we didn't know about the hd300 until it was for sale. Look at this from sagetv's point of view: you can only add so many features at a time.
We need to give them time to get things done. Just like with phoenix. We all want them to release it, but I'd rather get phoenix when it is finished and working than get it when it "mostly" works.

Having said that.... What's between SageTV and building a web browser into the HD400 or an "HD300 Pro". These things run a flavor of Linux, right? If that's true, it would seem like having a web browser would take care of any NetFlix UI issues just by using the native NetFlix web browser capability.... It would also add huge functionality... Or doesn't NetFlix do Linux-based browsers?

There is nothing for linux that will play content protected with Playready DRM on the netflix silverlight player. Moonlight will play some silverlight content on linux, but does not have Playready DRM support.
You need to be a Netflix Branded Partner to gain access to a Playready DRM solution for linux from Netflix. Quote:

Another reason why...
Found this interesting this morning on why Netflix Streaming won't be found on all Android devices.

FYI
For the 'You should have search first" crowd here is the reults when you do search for "Netflix"
Yeah that is easy for a new user to comb through... |
