Mounting network drives

When using the HD300 media extender I can mount network drives by specifying a machine name followed by a login and password combination.

Now, when I tell the HD300 to connect to the SageTV server (v7), I see no way to do the same thing from within it.. Is that functionality missing or is it hiding and I haven't found it yet?

SageTV media library folders are configured in Detailed Setup -> General. You add the folders there, and the SageTV software will scan and catalogue them. they are then browsed and watched in the Videos menu.

Is the drive on a server or other machine?

The SageTVService has to have access to the network shares you are trying to access. This means it has to be logged in as a User with those permissions (as opposed to the default user of 'LocalSystem'. LocalSystem doens't have access to network shares. Also, browsing for shares is somewhat inconsistant from a service, so you'll be better off using the Specify... button and typing ni the UNC path of the share (\\Server\Share)

And just to add, I tried and failed doing it this way: \\PCNAME\Drivesharename\Folder For some reason it doesn't like that.

Type in \\PCName\DriveSharename and then browse to the folder as it appears on the list and click use current when you get to the right one.

Good Luck,
Mike

Thanks guys! I've not had a chance to get back to play with it.. One of our Mac's took a power hit last weekend and has a disk problem and I've snarfed the SageTV server to reformat a spare 2Tb drive using the Windows XP installer -- I'm hoping to have SageTV back online in a few hours.. I'll be installing some new plugins and whatnot but won't be able to try this particular issue out for several days as it's going to take a long time to backup the Mac before I can fix the disk -- Apple's disk copy is claiming 16 hours to copy ~215Gb over Firewire 800.. Ouch!

Ok.. Finally had some time to play with this.. On the HD300, I can do the following in stand-alone mode:

1) Click on FileSystems icon (bottom center)
2) On the next screen click on Browse Network File systems (or similar) -- top item in the list of 2 items
3) Invalid usually is seen on the next screen -- scroll down and select "Specify" or something like that -- allows user to enter machine name and login credentials.

This works like a charm but I really see no obvious way to do this when using it as an extender w/ Sage V7.. I have the SageTV service running as something other than 'LocalService'.. The file server I'm trying to get onto is a OSX box running Samba. I guess I'll have to go looking for the 'specify' button mentioned above.. It would be nice to have a feature on the main menu somewhere that worked more like the HD300's menu does in stand-alone mode -- but perhaps it's just me noticing this difference..

In my case I do NOT want this fileserver to remain in any sort of importable directory list that can be seen by any casual viewer using the HD300's -- as it has some.. uhh.. unrated material not for the smaller crowd..

There is no provision in the stock SageTV UI for temporarily mounting drives on the server. (Remember that when connected in extender mode, it's the server's filesystem you're working with.)

There is a way, under Search > Browse File Systems, to play individual media files that aren't part of the imported media library. So if you can manage to navigate to your naughty stuff from there, you should be able to view it on the HD300 without importing it. (But bear in mind that the server can't access mapped drive letters when running in service mode.)

That's what I'm looking for -- I was in that menu last night and find no way to specify a server or share name -- if it's not in the list of available folders then... I tried pulling up the "options" menu to see if there's a way and found nothing.. Am I crazy for not seeing this menu that allows someone to browse \\myserver\myshare? I just can't find it for the life of me..

Not sure if this is what you mean, but from that main directory selection screen, I choose up a level until I'm at the top. Then on the right side, scroll down to network, select that, then the correct pc, share etc. Drill down to the server share folders from there. I seem to be having better results typing it in though, even thought it's been tedious from a remote.

I think I misunderstood what you were trying to do earlier. The place to put in "\\mvserver\myshare" would be when you are setting up import files.

As has been mentioned, IF you are in service mode, you can't see mapped drives on the server and there is no "explorer" type feature that I'm aware of that would allow you to call up an address except in the file import area. I don't think you're going to be able to do exactly what you are trying to do. I thought there was a way to set parental permissions on some of this stuff but I've never used it. Maybe looking into that and restricting an import directory is a better alternative?

Thanks Guys.. I'll try it out.. Yes, I'm using service mode and do not normally have this machine mounted via the network so browsing to it is fine.

GetGray -- I'll try the drill-down method -- if that does not pan out then I'll try parental controls and importing to see if it works.. I had done some initial searches on the forums and it sounded like the parental controls were not designed to do that but I've not really looked myself -- only what I read.

Thx!

I have been trying to set up network shares in the media import directories with no luck. my network shares look like this \\SEANS-I7-PC\Movies
typing this on my sage server pc in windows explorer gets me right there so i believe the address is correct but when entering it in "specify" in sagetv it just says the directory does not exist. It wasn't clear to me in your post but do I need to set up a special user account somehow? I am logged in as a admin user on the sagetv server PC when trying to set up the import directory. Any help you could give would be appreciated.

You need to use the SageTVServiceControl program to make sure the SageTV Service is logged in as a valid user (it doesn't have to be its own user account, it can be the one you are already using).
