Should I buy SageTV Media Center or Media Server? (re: headless server box)
I'd like to use SageTV on a headless (ie. no monitor) server box. This server box will do all the recording and capturing.
I'll view the recorded shows using SageTV Clients or XBMC. I've noticed that there are two products available: "SageTV Media Center" and "SageTV Media Server (for Windows Home Server)". I'm running Windows 7 (or might run Windows Server 2008R2) for my server so I'm not running Windows Home Server but would "SageTV Media Server" still work for me? What's the best version for a headless recording server? |

no the media server is WHS only. All other installs need the media center version.

Thanks.
Can the Media Center version act as a server? Will I need a client license in addition to the Media Center license? (ie. I won't be viewing anything on the server, my only client will be remotely connected over my LAN) |

Yes, Media Center can act as a server.
And yes, you will need a client license for a second computer on your LAN. If it's strictly for LAN use, then SageTV Client would be the recommended choice. If you plan to take it on the road and connect over the Internet, then Placeshifter is what you want. There's more on the differences between the two clients in this FAQ.

Does Placeshifter always transcode or does it have the ability to stream it as-is? (ie. 100% recorded quality)
Also, one more question... (sorry!) How does SageTV record DVB-S programs? For example, they are being broadcast at MPEG-4 so I'd like to capture the raw transport stream with it being re-encoded by SageTV. Is this possible? |

Placeshifter does not transcode when connected on the same LAN subnet as the server.
For digital tuners of all sorts, Sage captures the digital stream as it comes in, without re-encoding. Encoding comes into play only for analog sources such as SD tuners or component video capture devices such as the Hauppauge Colossus or HD-PVR.
