What uses the .properties files in v7

What purpose does the .properties file serve in v7. I used o think of this as a metadata backup but now that the basic metadata in in the file itself are they really needed.

Do some plugins require these?

They are not read except on import or reindex/re-add of files. The metadata is not in the file itself except for tv files.

The properties files also contain any changes to the metadata that have been made since the recording was made. ie: any updates that BMT makes.
