There's a little bit of information in this post:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...204#post251204

It's better than nothing.

With a modification or two, you might be able to get this one to work with the HD300:

http://infrared-resources.com/Infrar...B002JSDHCY.htm

You'd have to replace the 3.5mm plug with a 2.5mm plug. It also looks like the wiring diagram is different, as far as tip-ring-sleeve. So you'd need to make sure that it's wired properly.

Or better yet, make an adapter extension cable, with a 3.5mm plug on one end and the 2.5mm plug on the other end. The necessary rewiring could be handled within the adapter extension cable.

If you decide to try it, post your results back here for others to learn from.

IR receivers are pretty generic and widely available, is the HD300 one really customized? The only PITA would be the 2.5mm adapter, but i wonder if RatShack sells adapters.

All I have to go on is the wiring diagram provided in the link above. What is shown in the wiring diagram is different than what is described for the IR receiver cables that I googled, although I only looked at the ones that were reasonably priced. If you can find an off-the-shelf one that works, please post.

I don't use the ones that came with my Colossus and found that if I don't push it in all the way it works fine. Does take a little playing with to get it at just the right distance.

HD300 IR Extender Question

Is there something that i can buy that will do the same thing the HD300 IR extender did? I have one but don't have the IR Extender and i wanted to get that too, but can't now that the store is closed.

Does anyone know if you can use some other similar device and have it work?

Now that the store is closed you have to make your own

I don't have a HD300 yet but based on all the info available I think this would work. What do you all think?:

Buy this:
IR Receiver which meets the voltage requirements but has the wrong size plug and wrong plug wiring:
Infrared Receiver Extender Cable
http://infrared-resources.com/Infrar...B002JSDHCY.htm

OR maybe this which costs less but no confirmation that it meets voltage requirements for HD300 use:
http://www.octavainc.com/IR%20Receiver%20Extender.html
My gut says it will work based on my belief that the External IR Receiver for HD300 is nothing but an IR receiver device like this wired directly to the cable: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2049727.
OR hard to beat the 50 cent price on this if you want to experiment and don't mind the size of the box:
http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=5344
OR Other sources:
http://www.irblaster.info/motorola_rx.html
http://www.neworldit.com/ProductDeta...e=C-A35M/IRR-3

Replacement plug:
Replacement Right-Angle 3/32" Stereo Headset Plug
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2104064

Cut off the old plug and wire the replacement plug like this:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/atta...1&d=1283455061

Thanks for the links. Do you think instead of cutting an rewiring I could just use this adapter?

No for two reasons:
1) How do you change the wiring to work with the HD300? You need to swap the wiring for tip and ring.
2) That adapter only has two conductors and 3 appear to be necessary.

The hauppauge IR receivers have an IR blaster integrated, do they work with the HD300 with the cable color inversion?

No IR extenders

I really dont like the way SageTv is handling this purchase by google. I purchased a HD300 and need an external IR receiver for it and when I contacted them via the support line they basically told me to go pound sand. Even if they could not sell them, they could at least gave me some idea of what I could do to either build one or purchase one from another source.

I just hope my remote doesnt go out if this is the level of support we are going to get.

Yes.

There are two types as far as I know. One will have 3 wires, the other will have 4.

The 4-wire version (it's the one with two IR bugs on the end, 1 blaster, 1 receiver) comes with the HVR-2250 (it's what I used)

I'm struggling to remember what I came up with on this one (I had to use a volt meter to figure it out), but it's something like this from the plug end (on the left) to the IR bug end (on the right):

Orange -- Orange
Brown -- Black
Black -- Brown
Red --Disconnected

It might be:
Red -- Red
Brown -- Black
Black -- Brown
Orange -- Disconnected

I'll have to check when I get home to see if one of those is right...

Ignore the fact that the plug on this one has 4 sections (the HD300/HD200 only needs 3), because they still line up fine when plugged in.

-----------

The 3-wire version comes with other Hauppauge cards (not sure which ones). This one you just cut the wire between the plug and the IR bug, connect Red to Red, and then swap the copper and White. So from the plug end to the IR bug end you get:

Red -- Red
White -- Copper
Copper -- White

Hope that helps.

I have a hauppauge one (Came with the Nova DVB-S2 card) which has a plain copper sheath and inner red & black. I'd followed the previous instructions substituting black for white :-) and it didn't work

But I've just figured, by a process of elimination that this does :

Copper - Copper
Red - Black
Black - Red

I ordered one of these:
http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=5344
Can't beat the 50 cent price and the more I looked at it the more advantages I saw over the mini ones I would have to velcro in place.
I intend to change the connector to this
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2104064
I have the connector and and it seems perfect.
I expect it to take less than 10 min to snip, strip, and test which wire on which pin then solder. I'll post instructions and pics if I can in this thread. I didn't pay extra for fast shipping so it might be as much as 10 days for the part to arrive and for me to work on it.

I received the 50 cent playTIME IR receiver and I'm delighted with it. It's not nearly as large as it looked in the pic on the website and it has mounting tape on the back side. Only $7.61 including standard shipping with tracking number. It arrived in 6 Business days from the west coast to the east coast which is excellent.

See attached pics. It works great!. Very long range. The farthest I could get away in my house and still have line of sight to the receiver was 27 feet and it worked perfectly at that range. You have to modify it before you can use it on the HD300 though.

You can't use an adapter to go from the 3mm plug that comes on it to a 2.5mm plug needed by the HD300 because the wiring is wrong for the HD300. You have to cut off the 3mm plug that comes on it and wire it differently to the 3/32 Radio Shack plug.

1) Cut off the 3mm connector.
2) Slide the rubber o ring that holds the finished Radio Shack connector together onto the wire now.
2) Hold the wire in place on the new connector to figure out length then strip the outer insulation and wires.
3) Twist each individual wires strands together then tin the wires with a little solder.
4) Mount the Radio Shack connector in a vise to hold it and tin the tip and ring connections on the connector with a little solder.
6) Hold the Red wire in place and solder it to the sleeve/strain relief (See connection wiring photo).
7) Hold the White wire in place and solder it to the tip connection (See connection wiring photo).
8) Hold the Black wire in place and solder it to the ring connection (See connection wiring photo).
9) Test on your HD300.
10) Crimp the strain relief around the wire.
11) Assemble the connector and roll the o ring into place.

HD300 IR Extender

I could really use one additional HD300 IR extender. I now have an HD300 for each TV and all but one of them have the IR extender.

So if SageTV decides to unload any extras or someone else out there has one to spare, send me a note. I'm sure there are others like me as well.
