Help changing java heap size
Hey all,
Running a version of SageTV 7 in service mode on a Windows 7 32 bit os. Only clients are H200. Wanted to increase my java heap size. Didn't find it in my registery so I ran the little programming that does it for you (sorry, can't remember the one, but got it here). It seemed to work. When I checked the registery, it added the new registery entry with the right amount. However, when I check my java settings via the extender, it still says the default of 400MB for my max. instead of the 1024MB I set it to and I was still having some problems that lead me to believe my java settings were still low. FYI - I did reboot. TIA! |

Well, this may not be much help, but I don't think 32-bit Java can go past 1GB so you are maxed. I've heard that HD200's borrow RAM from the server, so you may indeed be at the max of what the extender can borrow, since your server needs some Java RAM as well. A lot of plugins can slow down or hurt things. My heap is at 768MB and I don't have ring of death anymore, etc.
Remember, in Win 7 it's found in that "Wow6432Node" subdirectory. You may want to be sure your Java-setting app is Win 7 compliant in that regard. I have seen other Java apps interfere with Sage clients. Java itself has internal setting, I am gathering from reading Java forums, that determine how much it opens with and what it can max do vs. what you change in Sage. I've never changed those settings though, just the ones indigenous to Sage.

Don't run any plugins. This is a 32 bit system so I don' think the wow thing applies to me. This pc is dedicated to sage so I run no other software on it. I don't know if my problem is even Java related but a lot of times when I run my BD rip (converted to mkv files) I will get bad stutering in the middle of the movie. When I run it through extender mode, I never have this problem. Therefore I am blaming this on java, that or the sage software its self. Thanks for the reply.

i use the same tool for changing my java size for sage. you need to stop the sagetv service. (be sure it is stopped) run the applet and change the size. then start sage service. you may also need to hard reboot your extenders.

Icon, it is also possible to have memory leaks. For better or worse, I reboot my XP Sage Server every day.
I only offer this out as a tip. There could be tons of things including your video card/driver if it is doing the transcoding, etc. Actually, I am now experiencing something similar on a Sage client - if any other Java applet is running, Sage Client crashes but ONLY on DVD playback and I might get away with it if I just watch the movie and don't chapter skip. I think you are on the right track with Java, but I know little about troubleshooting it. For sure, if you run Sage as a service it must be stopped and re-started. I run Sage as a program so I would automatically exit it anyway before working on the heap, properties file, etc. I hope you get your problem solved. Things like this can be highly frustrating.

Admittedly this is a long shot but ...
I set my keys manually and I had the same problem as you. In my case it was because I was running Sage using a different windows account (different from the one I was logged into when I made the registry changes), so the entries it was seeing were not the ones I was altering. |
