Placeshifting in the post-Google world?

Here's the problem I'm trying to solve:

I want to allow my daughter to watch recorded programs while away at college.
I had planned on picking up an HD300 and then letter her have one of my old HD100s.
Clearly that approach is no longer valid - for the foreseeable future, at least.

So, what other options do I have in a post-google world?
(BTW, she will have a Macbook Pro with her.)

Thanks,

Mitch

If you don't already own a Placeshifter license then your options drop to about nil. Unless you look at setting up something like Orb to placeshift your recordings out to the Internet.

HD100 license can be used as a placeshifter license...

If I have two HD100s running inside the house, are they using their placeshifter licenses?
In other words, if both HD100s are being used, can I then run a placeshifter client on at the same time?
Or, is it that only two of the three can be active at any given time?

Thanks,

Mitch

You can only have as many running simultaneously as you have licenses. So in this scenario you can only have 2 running. The third would work after you turned one of the HD100's off.

The 3rd would still run, but whoever turned on theirs last would get the "Trial Version" overlay.

I've watched that way since I've only got 1 placeshifter license from my hd100, and it's not too annoying, but it's not ideal.

I'm pretty sure the only way to clear that "trial version" overlay is to restart Sage, either the service or the application. I've got two clients licenses but have used them on 3 different PCs in the past and I had to restart sage when switching to a different PC.

yep- restarting placeshifter clears the trial message, if there's a free license.

Check out Splashtop; she could run it on her Mac and run anything SAGE has. However the PC SAGE is running from would be dedicated to her at the time. That is, she could run SAGE on your server, you could still access whatever you want from your extender. But what she "sees" is what is on your server.

You could also use playon and any android tablet or Ipad. There is android port to a PC.
