I'm not much of a linux guy, but I've been pretty impressed with what I've seen with Ubuntu. It's probably way more bloated than what you need though.

I think if I were trying to do what you are, I'd start with a MythTV system, install the sage client on it, and then figure out where in its startup it boots the mythtv and just change that part of it to boot sagetv instead.

I'm assuming you already have a linux version of SageTV client? If not, you might be in trouble. You can't buy one anymore, and I vaguely remember reading something here that you can't transfer from windows to linux.

Also, make sure you read this for some hints/tips: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30630

Not sure if this is luckily or unlucky, but I was going to build a system fore my parents so I have a million extra licenses of every kind. I just don't have extenders, which is why I want to build one.

Let me know what version of linux you are running and I will see if I can help with autoloading the extender.

Which is the best for sage? I don't even want a GUI, just boot straight into sage.

I found some posts on the internet about using Win7 Embedded to create your own STB. The posts reference using Win7 Media Center, but I am sure it would be just as easy to make it work with Sage.

I am exploring this route myself assuming we can ever purchase more licenses.
