Recording quality Q???
I am trying to figure out what is the best recording quality to use knowing i will burin it to DVD. By bets I mean file size to picture and sound quality.
I tried the SVCD and it was terrible. Also how many 30 minute shows shoudl I be able to get on a DVD. I am using Roxio 6. I began taping Sienfeld and can;t seem to get more than 2 shows per dvd using the default. Thx, Marc |

If you want to burn to DVD, you'll need to select one of the DVD recording qualities. The higher the bitrate the better the quality, but you can't fit as much on a disk.
How may 1/2hr shows per disk? Here's a guestimate (figuring the shows are only 20 minutes minus comercials). DVD ELP 1.8 GB/hr - 6-7 shows DVD LP 2.5 GB/hr - 5 shows DVD Standard 3.5 GB/hr - 3-4 shows Last time I tried, I got a whole 2hr DVD Standard recording (which is only about 90 min without commercials) onto a DVD-R. |

I've recorded about 500 dvds worth of television shows and movies off my Sage PVR, including Seinfeld. For that series, I can fit 8 episodes onto a single DVD-R and the quality is excellent. I use the DVD ELP 1.8 GB/hr mode, edit the commercials out (with VCR2MPEG) and burn with TMPGEnc DVD Author. I think the reason the results are very nice is because I record via the S-Video connection from my DirecTV system.
Part of the difficulty fitting x number of episodes onto a DVD-R is the dvd authoring program itself. For example, Ulead's MovieFactory 3 and Sonic's MyDVD default to some outragous bitrates, and will automatically convert all MPEGs to that level. So, even though your MPEG2 files are small (550mb each for Seinfeld), those programs will re-encode them and you'll only get 3 or 4 per DVD (they inflate to 1gb or more each!). To get around that issue, you have to disable the authoring program preference from re-encoding a DVD compliant MPEG2 file. Then you'll be able to fit more episodes/content onto a single dvd-r. TMPGEnc doesn't re-encode the MPEG2 file by default, so I never have to deal with it anymore. |

padre & stanger89 the authoring program he using is most likly converting the audio over LPCM this where 99% problem come form with most DVD authoring program.
marcw it not good idea to use SVCD it just end up re-encode the clip. padre Ulead's MovieFactory 3 don't use outragous bitrates by default the Preference from re-encoding a Compliant MPEG file is enable when you first install. In min way what padre is saying is ture. |

I think they are referring to MPEG2VCR. if so refer to Womble Multimedia .
