Something that I've been working on....

I'm starting a new Android project that manages SageTV/Phoenix (and maybe Gemstone) from your Android device....

Feel free to follow me on G+ for updates, etc. (I'll post some updates here from time to time as well)

It looks good. Will it work on a Kindle Fire?

I suspect it will work on a Kindle fire. I know I have another, unrelated app, and there are a couple of Kindle Fire users that use it. When I have more to show, I'll post an APK file and people can give it a try.

It will most likely be a free app that has certain paid features. I haven't fully worked that out, so any pre-releases that I share will be fully unlocked.

And, I will happily share a full version with anyone that helps me in a tangible way (ie, code, design, artwork, etc).

And, I would happily provide a full version anyone that down on their luck and really can't afford the cost of the app.

The reality is that this app will take about 1000 hours of my time... no matter what I charge for it... I'll never recoup that My primary goal is to serve my personal needs first. Making it a paid app, is way to ensure to that I don't spend another 1000 hours answering support emails as well (I don't think people realize the time it takes to build something like this -- or phoenix/bmt in general -- i've put way more time into phoenix/bmt than I will for this project) (So far those screens, which do very little, I've put in about 80 hours)

Unfortunately, I cannot open source the app because it's built on top of the proprietary android codebase that I use for all my other apps

Ooooh, this would go well with Plex on Google TV. Happy to try it out on my Sony NSZ-G7. And I'd even pay for it.

Right, most of the support emails or bad rating for my free remote apps are from people who don't even have SageTV... It's so hard to read the description before downloading a free app...

my entirely personal opinion is that the $$ amount should be set high enough to offset people buying it for the halibut, generating a ton of support. $10 minimum. You're not going to recoup your time investment, so stick with supporting people serious about it.

Is it going to require the use of Pheonix or will it work with default SageTV? with minimal additional plugins?

Will it just work inside the LAN or will it work over the interwebs?

It will require phoenix-core at minimum. The reason is that I don't see a need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to custom views, so, this application relies on some common views that phoenix provides, such as, "recent imports", and "tv grouped by season", etc. (Just to clarify... phoenix-core does not imply that you are using the Phoenix UI, but rather this application relies on the APIs that are provided by the phoenix core, So you can run default stv and still use this app... but somethings like 'Play On Extender' may not work unless you are using Phoenix UI.)

As for the communication, it currently works fine of 3g and wifi, provided that you allow externnal access to you sagetv server. You will need to configure 2 entries for your sagetv server though.

Eventually I may add options to limit the downloading of fanart over 3g so that it doesn't eat up too much of your 3g bandwidth.
