DD5.1 and PVR Functionality
I ran into a problem with another PVR product last night. I do not want to give up DD5.1 to use a PVR. So, I thought I would run the S-Video cable from the Cable Box (SA 3100HD) to the PVR Software and then to the TV and then run the audio from the cable box directly to my A/V Receiver. This worked except the video and audio are out of sync.
Will this happen with your product as well? P.S. I do not want to lose DD5.1 for PVR, and I do not want to lose PVR for DD5.1. Thanks, Frank T. Lee |

I didn't know any non-HD signals even had DD (Dolby Digital) encoded with them.
If you are trying to use SageTV for HD, then you'll have to wait because SageTV doesn't do HD at the moment. SageTV at the moment only handles PAL and NTSC (normal TV, cable, satellite, OTA) not ATSC (High Definition) John Meeks |

jmeeks,
I do not want to record HD. On Comcast Digital Cable, there are several movie channels that have DD5.1 (HBO, Starz, Showtime, etc.). So, in this scenario, how can I use SageTV and not lose the ability to hear DD5.1? I do not care that it cannot record it. Thanks, Frank T. Lee |

Frank,
Unfortunately, there aren't any capture cards that can record the DD5.1 stream. SageTV could probably handle the audio, but there's no current way of getting the audio to SageTV (or any other PC based program). The reason you saw the audio delay with the other program, and would see the delay with SageTV is that when you are watching television through SageTV, you are watching a *recorded* file, even if you are watching "live". Everything you watch is being recorded first, and then displayed. The way that the Dish Network, Directv and probably the cable PVRs work is they record the signal coming in *before* any decoding is done. Software PVR solutions get the audio and video data *after* decoding is done. |

...but a whole slew of Audio Cards/Chips that can input DD5.1... Unfortunately, this would tie SageTV to the active Audio kind of getting in the way of the "record in the background" model which is so desireable (i.e. the "background" feature is one of the key differentiators from, say, Hauppauge's own Scheduler/Recorder app). Not sure I hold out much hope for Tuner/Capture Cards having DD5.1 input though. Seems like a niche enough need that it will get overlooked unfortunately :-( |
