For streaming + local, no options
Just wrote up this grid looking for a single option for local + streaming video: https://plus.google.com/116376228263...ts/CzSbE2sCxCw . Sigh, that sucks.

Right now there seems to be nothing that does it all, on any MM front, it seems.
The streaming support should be easy if the device supports it, but even streamers limit there options which makes no sense to me. Like only some devices supporting browseing of online content vs. other's only supporting instant watching. I know as long as I wait for the perfect solution, it won't come. But as soon as I jump in with both feet, then it will. ... |

Are you using PlayOn for streaming to your HDx00s?

No, the gui looks like it was written by a mainframe programmer. To heck with WAF, I can't take it.
Sky please buy something soon, ideally non refundable, so the perfect product gets announced the day after and I'm out of my misery :-) |

I have a Roku, but not for the house, and love it for what it is. I also have a Pivos and love it for what it is. Neither are in my HT though. I might be going back to having an HTPC in my HT soon. I swore I would never do that again! But it might be the only way to achive what I am looking for, much like your self. |

Quick Diagram: Mac Pro recording from HDHomerun OTA via the EyeTV application -> iPad w/ EPG and recordings list -> AppleTV for viewing via Airplay The only thing that leaves is that the AppleTV can not do Amazon Instant. My iPad can, but they limited the Airplay to audio only (so I could watch it on my iPad and listen to it thru my home theater if I wanted to I guess?). I should also state that I converted all of my DVD's to H.264 and dropped them into iTunes for playback on my AppleTV's. I did this largely because we are mostly an Apple family now so it just made sense. Too often we would get ready for a road trip and we would have to wait for the transcoding to complete from handbrake (even with my Mac Pro). Now I can just grab the ones I want straight from itunes, drop them on the iPad and my daughter has entertainment for the whole car ride.... I used to really care about quality and staying in the original format, but based on how little I watch movies anymore since my daughter came along, convenience is more important than quality. I know that's blasphemy on these forums!

sorry, the chart is "what can it do". Although I should update it to indicate PlayOn.
Personally, i'm using the Roku for those 3, GUI is so much nicer that it actually gets used. |
