Moving windows directory to another drive, keep recordings as is?

so i just ran across a problem I had duct taped a solution for, and promptly forgot about

server died about a year and half ago due to OS drive failure. In my rush to get it functional again, i apparently allowed WHS to install backup to a 1tb recording drive instead of the one i had intended. Worked fine, so I let it go, and now I have noticed that the 1tb drive is full, time to clean up and get it back the way its supposed to be.

What is the best way to move the existing windows directory to a new boot drive? Can I just disconnect all drives, connect a new one, and have whs restore to it? Then, reconnect the sage recording drives, one of which would be the old boot, and delete the windows directory?

because i would rather not waste a 1tb drive as the OS. I prefer to keep them separate, on the theory that the OS drive is more likely to go than the data drives

can you just move the recordings to a new drive, shrink your OS partition, create a new partition, and add recordings to that?

Messing with the boot drive / bootup folder is always more painful than anything else...
