But where's Sage 8?

Thanks Jeff! It's really great to see you pop your head up here on a semi-regular basis

Basically...no need to worry....when/if there comes a time to be worried, I will give you all ample notice.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you, too, Jeff!

Thanks Narflex! That's a great Xmas gift for us, although I was seriously hoping to see news of a new run of HD Extenders.

One of my original Hd-100's died a few weeks back and I had to pick up a used one here. I was kind of hoping to find an HD-300, but those things disappear before the E-ink dries on a posting.

I just wonder if the Google Fiber TV boxes are compatible, and would work as extenders for SageTV V7.x, and if we could buy them...

That would be great - the other added benefit is that they seem to function as wifi hot spots as well...

Two big thumbs up! and Thank You to Jeff.
I still come across new (to me) features that reinforce my choice in SageTV so many years ago.

The future

It has been a long while since we've had any hint of update from Google.

Or, have I missed something?

What do the tea leaves say about a path forward for Sage?

Jeff posted in December that they have "no plans to shut off the EPG service anytime in the near future." That's pretty good news. I think we're relatively safe on that front.

Of coure, the big news ~6 months ago was that SageTV is power Google Fiber TV in Kansas City. Did you see that? Jeff hinted that they might do something beyond just the Fiber TV project, but there's been no mention of that anywhere. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Google released some sort of retail version of the Google Fiber system. It looks really cool, though, so I hope I'm wrong about that.

Pigs will be flying sooner than the masses will get fiber ran to their front doors.

Kansas City is a bit different than most (all?) muncipalities as I understand it. They actually own/install their own network infrastructure. So Google is able to take out the middle man of Comcast, Uverse, FIOS, etc... and go right to the city to start/maintain the fiber rollout.

I just don't see this ever catching on mainstream. Providers have already laid so much copper in neighborhoods around the country there is just no way they are willing to go back through and put down fiber. The cost would be so high that the consumers wouldn't be able to afford the monthly subscription fee for the fiber connection.

But maybe we can still get that fancy version of "Sage 8" sans the fiber.

Pigs have been flying over the Battersea power station for decades:

And many telcos are rolling out FTTH. FIOS is Fiber to the premises, is it not? I believe new homes are getting FTTH as well. Eventually we will all get there but it will take a while. But if telcos want to compete with cable they will have to step it up.

Here in my part of Canada (Toronto) I can get cable internet of 150/10 without FTTH. The best the phone company can offer is 25/7 with a service that they call "Bell Fibe" and confuse people into thinking that they are getting FTTH when it si really FTTN. So if people start to care about faster speeds then the telcos have to go the FTTH route.

Yeah, that's all I meant. When I said the "Google Fiber system" I meant just the TV system. In theory Google could create a version of their Google Fiber TV "Storage Box" that either has a CableCard tuner, or hooks up to something like an HDHR Prime.

I don't know about all -- unless you remove all the remote/rural areas in Canada and the US...

That has been a misunderstanding spread by several of the press. Kansas City, Kansas - less than 1/2 of the initial Google Fiber area does have some of their area where they "control" their own power lines, but that's it. Kansas City, Missouri has KC Power & Light and Google worked with them to get fiber on those lines. There are a larger than normal number of above ground power lines in the greater KC area and that might have helped Google lower their costs.

PS: If I were a betting man I would bet we'll see Google Fiber TV tech end up outside of Google Fiber someday. It's far from a sure thing, but I can't imagine them not using it in a larger consumer area than where it is now. I'd love to see a Google Fiber TV/GoogleTV product. Google are you listening?

We will have to agree to disagree. Fiber will never be mainstream at least not in the next several decades. Too much copper is already under the ground to just abandon it and begin laying new infrastructure. I for one don't want to pay several hundred dollars a month to get gigabite download speed. I'm very happy with my 20Mbps using Comcast.
