difference between forced & normal EPG updates?

Is there some difference between "normal" updates & forced updates?

I'm asking because the last 2 times I've checked the listings to see why I don't have team favorite upcoming for the NCAA tournament, it has had the generic "Teams TBA" listing. Then if I force an EPG update via the web interface, the teams are filled in, and the favorite rule kicks in. In both cases, the last update was an hour or less before I checked.

What I'm imagining is that the "normal" update just looks for the next day (eg, 12 days from now), but the "force" re-fetches the entire 11 days (or however many days it is). ..

I also wonder why I don't get updated team info with automatic updates. It happens during NFL playoffs as well. I set it to only download 5 days worth of guide data to mitigate some situations, but it doesn't work for March Madness.

Any ideas how to make the auto-update a full update?
