Tivo Roamio
Just curious, if people have seen the announcement about the new Tivo Roamio.

Yeah, I've been watching Dave Zatz's blog. The only big surprise was that they're not supporting Android at launch for placeshifting. I guess I was expecting HDMI-CEC support, too.
It looks pretty good. It sounds like navigation is speedier, which was needed. They finally got dynamic tuner allocation with the Minis, the lack of which I found inexcusable. If this came out a year ago, I probably would have switched to it. Since that time, I built a new SageTV server, got a cablecard tuner, and managed to expand my system with additional HD300s. At this point I don't see much of a draw to the TiVo. I use HBO Go quite a bit, so I'd probably be inclined to keep my Rokus around. And then I'd need to buy some Dunes (or maybe a PCH, though the new ones seem buggy) for my movie collection. But, it's nice to have some sort of fall back option. If I lost my cablecard tuner (due to Verizon copy protecting stuff), I'd probably switch to TiVo over switching to all HD-PVRs. Or, maybe someday Ceton will actually get their Echo working. I'm a little skeptical Ceton will last that much longer than Hauppauge, though. But, they're at least a little more diversified. They sell some (modified) cablecard tuners to the hospitality market. |

This actually has promise, it looks real nice. There are just so many fees with Tivo, and I would want the Plus or better, with no Android support - I'll have to see how this pans out.

Looks nice, but $180 a year to provide a guide is still too expensive. I've always had a problem with Tivo's pricing. I wouldn't mind a nominal fee, or a free unit, but a high fee and an expensive unit are a real turn off.
It would be nice to have Tivo's features, I like the way it finds shows and such, but for the cost, I'm just too cheap to be willing to pay it. |

Yea, I've looked at Tivo before. What I currently have recorded in SageTV comes to 233 hours so I would need the $600 unit to even have the capability of storing that much. And I'm currently contemplating upgrading one of the recording drives. Currently have 1.5TB across 2 drives and are about 2/3 full. Will upgrade the 500GB to a 1TB. Crazy how much we've recorded and haven't yet been able to watch.
But back to the topic. Tivo seems like a nice system but I'm not willing to pay the fees to keep it running. I'd rather be able to put that money into a system I can manage myself.

I must have missed it in the article, but I didn't read anything about multi-room action.....will this box, as do the Premiere's, place a big, red X through any program that Hollywood doesn't want you to see in more than one room?
Fail if that's the case

I have 1 question I didn't see an answer for. Will it playback media from somewhere else? (like a NAS)

There's multi-room support via extender which is $99 a pop.

I'd like the ability to record 6 premium channel shows at the same time - and I don't have much more than 3TB recording space today. I'm going to take a serious look at the Roamio - now that they have extenders, free streaming apps and - most importantly - a new device with a snappy UI again, at least that's what I hear. |

well, if it works like my Sage extenders, i.e. I only need one Tivo server so to speak, then that's some progress.
As it is now, I have three Premieres, and the only material I can share between them doesn't include ANY premium channel material, largely.

I can't confirm that, though. It's basically just a guess where I assume everyone is sensible (a dangerous assumption, I know). It would be awfully good to know for sure from someone with a Roamio+Mini system. |

EDIT: So just learned that those flags don't appear to be an issue for the Mini - however, not all 3rd party content stored on the Main system can be played back. Last edited by flavius; 08-21-2013 at 10:56 PM. |

Of course, nothing is perfect. Certainly not SageTV. But even though you might in the long run spend more on a SageTV system you get a lot more for your money.

am i thinking correctly that a roamio + 5 mini system that would replace my sagetv + 5 extender system would cost roughly $40/month on top of my cable bill?

That looks about right to me. $45, to be precise, although they say multi-service discounts may apply. Plus taxes and other fees, I'm sure.

I haven't looked too closely at the Roamio, but I know with all their other boxes they do still offer a "lifetime" option at time of purchase(maybe an addo on too??). Last time I looked I believe it came in right around 3 years worth of montly subscription.

Just keep in mind that if you want to upgrade your Tivo within those 3 years, I don't believe you can transfer the lifetime service. I think it's lifetime of the exact Tivo device it's purchased for. If you're on these forums, my guess is that you'll constantly be looking for the next big thing and probably won't be happy with your current setup in 3 years.
