Tivo

I am not a Sage TV users. I am a long time Tivo user and found this site while researching the latest Tivo/Mini features.

I have been a Tivo subscriber/user since 1999. I still own a Series 1. I also have two Series 2 and three Premieres all with life-time subscriptions. And they all still work. I don't use the Series 1 or 2 anymore because I am all digital now. I have seen the life-time subscription go from $199 to 499 over the years and it hurts. As a current LT subscriber I get $100 off for new devices which helps.

I have been told by various friends and bloggers that Tivo is going to be dead. First it was Replay TV, then it was the various providers developing their own DVRs. But 14 years later Tivo is still here. Are their prices high? Yes. But so are Apple IOS devices but folks keep buying them. Tivo is not different. It just works and they are reliable. Sure I have replaced a hard drives over the years just like any other device but they are all still operable.

I stream content off my NAS to each of my Tivo with Streambaby. I use kttmg to pull content for my kids to take it on the go. And I have a Tivo Steam for the kids tablets. It is all completely integrated inside the the Tivo? No. But is all works and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to manage or operate. Happy kids = happy wife = happy husband. While I believe I can financially justify the 6 Tivos I have purchased over the last 14 years, it is more important to me that I have been able to provide content that my family can operate without needed my assistance. That is priceless.

Thanks Flavius for your postings. They have been really helpful.

No. At least not yet.

My kids have been streaming (whatever they watch) almost exclusively for a number of years now. Physical recordings have become a lot less important in our family, but I don't quite see yet how I can retain access to all the premium content we pay for in a convincing manner like we have today with TiVo - without a TiVo.

Maybe it's going to be as simple as there won't be a way.

I have been seeing many articles today claiming that Tivo is invalidating the above article and saying they are heads down moving forward with Tivo Roamio as well as Cable system DVR software, so yeah... I don't know

The one concern that I always have is drive failure. With SageTV my recording are spread over 3 different drives. In addition, on a nightly basis, any new recordings are backed up to my NAS.

With Roamio having only one 3TB drive, how do you guard again drive failure?

Is there an easy way to backup the recordings?

Thanks,
John
