"Only" $22/mo for the 6 tuner DVR box and an additional $10 per additional TV. What a bargain!

That being said, it does seem that companies are finally beginning to add the capabilities that we have had with SageTV for years now. I'm not saying they are better than SageTV, but they are starting to compete a little.

Expensive for sure. The part I found interesting is they say it will eventually have the ability to transcode to any device. That's an interesting feature.

12 tuners, but only 2TB for storage (a chunk of which is most likely used for the OS and other things)? My HD-PVR (at its max quality) averages nearly 7GB per hour-long TV show. 2TB are going to fill up pretty quickly, especially once you add in movies. Then again, we aren't the "typical" DVR user they're targeting. There's a reason we're still using Sage.

Actually, it's not too bad. I am always amazed how people (including me BTW) are willing to shell out big bucks up front to avoid a monthly charge.

Let's see, I figure my SageTV setup has cost me (very roughly):
- $750 for the basic PC hardware.
- $600 for the 6 hard drives (not counting the drive upgrades and replacing failed drives)
- $200 for capture devices.
- $500 for extenders (3 @ $179 each)
- Plus incidentals that I won't even count.

That comes to about $2,000.

If I read this post properly it would cost me $42 per month for 3 TVs. Rounding a bit the breakeven point is about 4 years. That's really not all that bad.

That's a bit steep. My current systems could be cloned for about $550 w/OS and boot SSD and no recording storage, and those 6 HDs you list would store at lease 12 times what this new system will, lets also drop my SSD! So lets drop $800 for a system cost of $1200 . Also, the machine can be used for almost anything a normally PC can be used for! (a few weeks ago, I used my dad's to do a 5 person Google Hangout call, while he was recording 3 or 4 shows, no issue)

Also, what is the monthly bill for three IPC1100s?

22x12 is $264 a year, plus the IPC1100s = ??? (lets just make it $300) Four years pays for the box. Any banker will tell you anything under 5 years is stealing! I'm not saying you are wrong, just a little off if you compare apples to apples.

Pricing with Verizon is pretty steep. 2TB isn't enough space for sure, but at least it seems like some of these companies realize that the current DVR offerings are crap.

Obviously to us this isn't quite good enough, but to joe consumer it's miles ahead of where they are now.

Ignoring the 2TB issue, the monthly fee is probably comparable or better to what I have done with Sage. I believe I have had SageTV on 3 (maybe 4) different servers since I started in 2007 with SageTV. Then go through the number of capture devices I have went through (some still in use, some retired), the monthly cost is not bad.

Now, the 2TB issue is huge. I am thinking about picking up another 4TB to replace a 1TB drive because I am down to 2TB of space.

The next major issue is that even if you could plug a 4TB USB drive in, you won't be able to move it from machine to machine.

I may need to watch this, especially if the Amazon Fire becomes a legitimate alternative...having said that, I don't see myself switch from STV any time in the near future. But I am looking for an alternative or failsafe.
