Lan Speed test.
I found this tool that is great writes a file up to 9 gig across a network then reads it. This helped me find some network wires that had problems. They were really slow... was slowing the speed of my NIC.
http://www.totusoft.com/lanspeed.html The lite version is free .. used my laptop and switched wires I eliminated the defective ones... and replaced them. Also I was able to optimize my nic. One thing I did find out that disabling all offloads on my NIC increased the throughput significantly. Found 1 wire that dropped my link speed down to 100 needless to say it found its way to the trash.

I noticed that as well with my server grade nics, but not the cheap ones. I guess the onboard processors have come a long way.
