Licensing

I'm assuming that with open source will mean we won't require license keys anymore? Or am I an a$$ for assuming?

For the open source build(s), correct. All releases of Sage prior to open source will still require the license/keys.

do we think the EPG will work with the licensed versions, but not with the open source versions?

I don't believe that has been confirmed yet. If I were doing the open source release, I would probably figure out a way where a small fee could be charged for EPG service, with a code, etc. My hopes are that the EPG source we use today would become available in some fashion, even if there was a small yearly fee for it.

Schedules Direct does exactly that, right?

Correct. That's what Slugger's Schedules Direct EPG plugin uses.

What about stuff like MPEG-2 codecs? Or will they have to be removed?

Jeff has stated that we'd get fair warning when EPG data was going away... to date, there has been no warning, so I don't think we need to worry about EPG data, yet... but if it happens, then I think Slugger's plugin would be the way to go.

Any system that is currently in use is likely to be able to decide full ATSC MPEG-2 perfectly fine with ffmpeg, so I'm not sure the MPEG decoder being included is of much necessity at this point.

The MPEG2 DirectShow filters for decoding will NOT be included in the open source release because they were commercially licensed. You can just get these elsewhere such as ffdshow or more than likely there's already one installed on your system.

LAV filters are probably the gold standard these days anyway, and heck they're free to boot

In my mind, I did not apply that original EPG statement from Jeff to the open source release, rather I made the assumption that this was some form of on-going support for those folks that made a Sage purchase in the past, a token to those that are still faithfully using the licensed versions.
