version of Java
I've seen some references to people using Java 7. Will Java 8 work? Do certain things break?

Java 8 is fine for core sagetv... but the Web UI and and things that depend on it will break.

I've been recommending everyone use Java 7u80 x86. That is the most universally 'working' version of java for a SageTV system.

This thread got moved, but I was specifically asking with regards to V9 / open source, since it seems this would be an opportunity to make SageTV fully compatible with newer versions of Java.

SageTV IS fully compatible with java 8. As far as I know, it is only a few of the web based plugins that have issues with it.
