You may need to be more specific. Gemstone will display DVD style folders just like and media file if that's what you are referring to.

Most people play DVDs by ripping them to an import folder and scanning the import folders in SageTV. You could add your DVD drive as an import folder and then scan it in SageTV and your DVD would show up to play. Assuming I understood what you are trying to do of course.

Direct DVD playback has always been spotty for me, but I've been using extenders for several years. As BobPhoenix mentioned, I added my server's BluRay drive as an import folder. After putting in a disk and running an update, it generally works for DVDs, but not always and never for BluRay disks of course. Ripping is the best option, but that's not something the family wants to handle and sometimes I'm not around.

Honestly, I'm probably going to just suck it up and buy a BluRay player for the main TV. We get most of our movies via RedBox and being able to just come home and watch it should make up for the hassle of adding another video input (and remote) to my existing mess

Are you using an extender? Client PC? Or is your HTPC also your SageTV server?

My HTPC is my tv and entertainment server. If I can just figure out how to get it all going it is defiantly worth the time and effort and only use on controller to control everything is a big pluse.

do you have AnyDVD or AnyDVD HD? which are required to be on the system because it strips copy protection allowing you to play it. Don't know if this might be your issue?

You shouldn't need that, but back in the XP days you did need to have a valid DVD Decoder pack installed. For example:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_dec...223-trial.html

I believe Windows 7 has that built in, so it should just be a matter of picking the right codecs? It's been a really, really long time since I played DVDs direct in Sage so I don't remember how to set it up, but it seems to me there was a specific setting for DVD decoders.

If you have proper DVD Decoders installed, it should 'just work'. Win7, as someone mentioned, includes a Microsoft DVD-DTV Decoder, which should be all that's required.

For starters, What is the symptom you are getting when you try to play a DVD in sage?

Yup, looking at page 193 in the manual, there's a section for DVD setup, you should make sure you've got DVD-compatible decoders configured in there.

Hey guys yeah I figured out what the problem was a while back with the issue. I just had the wrong decoder selected in sage, felt kinda dumb after that...
