mplayer compiling

Has anyone been successful compiling mplayer on Ubuntu? I have downloaded the sources from github, the ones that Sean posted, but I can't get it to compile. I also followed his directions for building SageTV and even in that process it fails when it gets to mplayer. I use Ubuntu everywhere and would like to be able to use placeshifter, well, everywhere.

The version that I posted, was a work in progress... It would require that the base mplayer sources be updated to match ffmpeg. I never completed the mplayer upgrade (got side tracked with the miniclient), but, for it to compile, the base mplayer will need to be updated, once again.

Ok, I thought I would try to help out maybe add some audio stuff that I am missing. I figured out to untarball the sources into a directory, CD into that directory run ./configure then ./make then ./make install but I never got past the first ./make
