Free the cable boxes

If this bill passes, I bet we will see bunch of many new DVR cable boxes flow into the market

Call me a skeptic, but this is exactly what CableCard was supposed to do, and where did it get us? Why is this going to be different?

With CC, they screwed up by allowing the cable companies to create, manage, dictate (etc) pretty much everything surrounding the standard. If they allow that again, we'll get the exact same result. Actually, this would probably end worse, since the companies won't even bother if it's just as controlled. Fool me once...

Hopefully, they'll learn from their mistakes.

This is the same thing that was briefly discussed in this other thread.

It doesn't actually take a new bill. The FCC is doing this as a regulation through the rulemaking process. This is intended to be the replacement for CableCard- the FCC is citing the same law that led to the development of CableCard (Section 629 of the Communications Act).

Well, for one, I bet it's going to be even more thoroughly DRM-encumbered...
