HDPVR on Linux

I've got one of those original HDPVR units - does Ubuntu 14.04 support it by default?

Or do I need to find some linux drivers out there and compile them up?

Plug it in... if you see /dev/video0... it worked If not, then don't bother with it.

That's pretty much how I deal with most A/V things in Linux. It's too much of a pain to re-compile drivers with every kernel upgrade even with DKMS. Eventually you'll hit that kernel that doesn't place nicely and get to spend the evening figuring out why.

Yeah, you can make things work, but, as I get older, I have less time and patience for these things... Most things in linux will just work, but, video cards and media devices have always been problematic, so before I buy... I research (ie, certain HDPVRs will not work in linux), and if I have hardware that is not recognized, then I just forget about it

Research is underrated.

I'm not going to be able to help much there... But I think that the IR blaster on the HDPVR can be used by SageTV... provided you only have a single HDPVR... I've never used it, though, but I think it does work.

There's an LIRC module for it, but I haven't tried to use it. I don't know if it's any easier than the link below today, but it would appear you might need to compile the module.

Actually the link says that the module is there for 11.04+ in Ubuntu... so maybe just the "enabling" section of your wiki article is needed.

What type of STB is it hooked up to? There may be a better way to control it than IR. I'm changing channels on my DirecTv genie using it's web interface and the GenericTuner plugin.
