SageTV Tuning HDHomeRun to Wrong Physical Channel

I seem to be having an intermittent problem with SageTV tuning my HDHomeRun OTA channels. My wife has noticed that the wrong channel was recorded a number of times during this new TV station. For example, last night, instead of Big Bang Theory (CBS - 509 - WUSADT - 71-9-1) being recorded, The Voice (NBC - 504 - WRCDT - 71-4-1) was instead.

So today I was trying to debug was might be going on. I went into Channel Setup for Tuner 0 on the HDHomeRun and double checked the physical (tuning) channels for each of the major OTA networks in my area. They are all correct.

I then used Preview This Channel to check to see if each of the major OTA networks were tuning correctly: ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, myTV, NBC.

What I noticed was that sometimes the wrong channel would be tuned. For example, sometimes when I tried to preview myTV, FOX would show up in the preview.

I'm clueless how to debug this further. Any suggestions? It seems to be happening on both the HDHomeRun and Hauppauge WinTV-7164 ClearQAM tuners I am using.

My setup:
SageTV 9.0.4.232
Java 1.7.0_71
Cable Provider: Verizon Fios
Zip: 20141
Original OTA/Clear QAM HDHomeRun (ignored in OpenDCT)
Hauppauge WinTV-7164 (ignored in OpenDCT)
Ceton InfiniTV (tuned with OpenDCT)

Just as another data point, I kept the HDHomeRun Config GUI open while hitting "Preview this Channel" in the channel setup of the HDHomeRun-0 tuner for Logical 506 / Physical 72-20-1

Sometimes, the Config GUI reported that 72-20-1 was currently tuned. Sometimes it reported that 72-5-1 was tuned. Each time I hit "Preview this Channel" I observed Config GUI registering a channel change even though SageTV was supposed to be tuning the tuner to the same channel it was just on.

To me, it seems like one of two things are happening, but I don't know how to confirm which one:
  1. The HDHomeRun is messing up the command to tune to a particular Physical Channel
  2. SageTV is asking the HDHomeRun to tune to the wrong physical channel

I updated SageTV to 9.0.8.429 this morning and redid my tests by trying to tune the HDHomeRun via the channel setup screen's preview channel function.

9.0.8.429 seems to have the same issue. When I ask to tune 72-20-1, it tunes 72-5-1 about 3/4 of the time instead.

Seeing that both the HDHomeRun (on its own network connected to a dedicated NIC in server) and the internal Hauppauge have the same tuning issue occurring, it seems to me to be a SageTV issue and not a hardware or network issue.

In looking at the logs though, for both the HDHomeRun and Hauppauge, it looks like the current physical channel number is being used.

Code:
Wed 9/28 10:11:22.892 [MainMsg@14b9aee] autotune0 digital tuner 'Hauppauge WinTV-7164 Analog Capture-0' num=72-20-1 (ver 3.1)

I'm stumped.

As a quick fix, you might try having OpenDCT handle it for you. I did some fixes to ATSC tuning in it a little while ago, and it's been rock-steady for me.

Thanks Fuzzy. I did just that. The channel changes are faster than I anticipated. I just hope that I don't get the "Halt Detected" messages and failed recordings that seem to plague me with my Ceton when recording the wife's girly movies on the Hallmark HD channel.

If it's only happening on a single channel, it's probably a signal issue.
