Capture Devices/Solution for DRM Channels on Linux?
I currently have a Windows SageTV Server which has worked very well for many year. The one issue though that I have periodically experienced is Java Heap memory issues I believe due to the number of Extenders I have. This said I began the process of building a Linux x64 Headless server with 9.xx as I understand moving to 64 bit will minimize or eliminate the Heap issue. I have two HDHomerun Primes for tuning all Non DRM channels and one Hauppauge Colossus & a STB for tuning protected channels for recording. Time Warner is my provider.
Having installed the Linux Server with the Script provided in another post I got pretty much everything working but my Colossus as I wanted to confirm I could get everything working before I took down my old server and moved to the new Linux box. The last piece is to find a solution for the protected channels but I have found no Linux drivers for the Colossus anywhere. So my question is what devices or solutions are available which I can utilize with SageTV to record DRM Channels to replace my Colossus. If I need a STB that is fine as I already have one, but having looked at many postings on various sites it has been difficult to answer the simple question of what capture devices are available that work with Linux & DRM Channels. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

The HD-PVR 1212 works great in Linux, and drivers are bundled in most current distros.

Not ideal for some, but I believe you could leave a Windows server up to just act as a Sage network encoder for any of your Windows-only tuners.
I've not done this with a Colossus, but this is working well for me with some older tuners allowing my server (running in the unRAID Docker) to use them.

As Fuzzy mentioned the HD-PVR will get the job done. The HD-PVR 1212 coupled with a USB-UIRT for channel changing has been rock solid for me since my recent migration from a Windows server to a Linux VM running in an unRAID server.

Thanks for all the responses. I am not interested in keeping two machines up but the HD-PVR 1212 (if I can find one as I believe they are discontinued) may be one option I can pursue. BTW, I assume the Newer HD-PVR2 is not supported in Linux? That's how it appeared from what I read.....

I believe you could run windows in a virtual container and then use your card as a network tuner a little more complicated but still one machine.

1) When I connect this to the machine will it automatically detect it and add / activate any necessary drivers? I am using ubuntu 14.04 Desktop Linux so I assume that the drivers are present in this version? If anyone can confirm that would be great..... 2) I will also need to enable my USB-UIRT on the Linux box. Are the drivers also in the distro, and if again so will they be automatically detected and loaded? 3) Once these are both installed and the drivers are loaded I assume sage will just see them? I know this is not a Linux Support site so my apologies and thanks up front for any idiot focused help that is provided... Merry Christmas! |
