Horizontal banding dark scenes

I've recently been noticing horizontal banding during dark scenes when watching recorded shows streaming through my HD300 attached via HDMI to my Samsung HDTV. The shows are being encoded by Hauppauge HD PVRs attached to STBs. I'm using SageTV V9. I have the HD300 set to play back at 1080i which is what my STB cable boxes are set to. My cable provider is now Spectrum (use to be Time Warner). Could they have reset my STB's resolutions without any intervention on my part? Any suggestions on where and how to start trouble shooting? Thanks.

I had this happen to me and it ended up being Hdmi cable.

It could be that they reconfigured some stuff on the head end and black levels are a little lower, and you are getting analog noise on the component cables going into the HD-PVR that is more visible with darker blacks. Are the bands static, or are they rolling up through the image?

I've isolated this to one of my STBs and PVRs, so I think it's a hardware problem on my end.
