Java 8

Currently running Java 7 Update 80.

Was planning to upgrade in place to Java 8... any reason not to? Pointers to know about?

Thanks in advance.

If you use any of the web-enabled plugins for SageTV, be advised that you may see them stop working under Java 8.

Some people have been lucky and their stuff still works, but that isn't everybody's experience.

I just tired upgrading to Java 8 on a Windows system as BMT was not working. This turned out not to be such a good idea as now the Jetty server doesn't work so none of the Jetty apps work.

The Jetty server has become an important part of SageTV so if upgrading to Java 8 on my server will break them ... then I will freeze all upcoming updates for now. My Production server is still java 7...... luckily I do not use fanart.

I am using Java 8 on all of my platforms. There are only two noteworthy things that I am aware of that become broken when running Java 8. The Jetty landing page that lists all of the servlets doesn't load and the mobile web interface no longer loads. I can live without both of these, but I am starting to get a little anxious that a new web interface may be a long ways off.

I really do not use BMT what I am Leary off ... is if the Windows Installer is upgraded to automatically install Java 8.... as I am still using SJQ3 ... tried SJQ4 but kept saying disabled on my test machine.

I did a clone of my SageTV production server and upgraded to Java 8 and everything works including SJQ3... So I am happy with Java 8. Ignore my previous paranoia

Gotta get some beer for the games....

Lets also remember that moving to Java 8 can impact things that are not part of SageTV but that touch the SageTV Server through Jetty. There are a few posts here for example where moving to Java 8 breaks the ability of the Kodi Add-On for watching sage recordings to function properly.
