Direct Ethernet connection for HD HomeRun Prime units
Occasionally, I am getting errors with my two HD HomeRun Prime devices where the Digital TV tuner stopped producing data while recording, and SageTV will try to reset the device. I purchased a couple of 10/100/1000 network cards to provide a direct data paths from the two HD HomeRun Primes into the SageTV computer, instead of possibly contending with other data that runs through my 24 port switch.
I tried installing an extra network interface card into the SageTV computer, but there isn't any network connectivity when the network card is directly connected to a HD HomeRun prime with a straight through Ethernet cable running from the extra network adapter to the HD HomeRun Prime. I tried configuring the network adapter for a different subnet range and DHCP. I'm trying to directly connect the two devices. Would I need to connect the network adapter with a cross-over Ethernet cable? I'm not sure how I would configure the network adapter. I plan on directly connecting each of my two HD HomeRun Prime units to their own dedicated network cards. I would have two network cards in my computer, plus the computer's built-in network card. |

I do this on my system. My HDHomeRun OTA and Prime are both connected to a switch, then a dedicated network card. If I remember correctly, all you need to do is set the card network address to 169.?.?.? (sorry at work, you'll need to find the correct address on the SD forum site.). The HdHomeRun firmware will look for a DHCP server, and when that times out, also default to a 169.?.?.? address. They are then on the same subnet, and the HDHomeRun software can find them. (not sure how it works, but I've always run it this way.)
I did notice when setting up my Prime, the web based software will NOT work in this config. You will need to use windows programs.

169.254.x.x is reserved for hosts that can't obtain an IP address through other means. So it could very well be that if you don't mess with the Windows interface or the HDHomeRuns, they will all pick something on the same subnet after a while. (Windows will pick something in 169.254 at least.) I don't know if/how it handles collisions.
What I'd probably do is pick a subnet you don't currently use like 192.168.100.x. When the HDHR is accessible (plugged into your switch), configure it with a static IPs on the new subnet. (You'll then lose connectivity to it.) Then set a static IP on your NIC on the same subnet. Then plug the HDHR into the NIC.
