Android TV Mini Client With VPN Cannot Connect To Server

I am running SageTV Mini Client on a Mi Box Android TV and when my VPN is turned on the mini client cannot connect to the server. It works fine if I disable the VPN. Is there a way to connect to the server if a VPN is on?

When you say VPN is turned on... is that a VPN on the Android Box? SageTV Server? How are you trying to connect ot the server (Locator ID, IP address, etc)?

To be honest, I've never used a VPN on and Android device so I'm not sure what it's doing, but, if you are connecting to the server via IP or Locator (and server is setup to accept placeshifter users, I'd think it should just work).

My vpn (openvpn for android) has a setting to allow local networks to come in outside the vpn. "bypass vpn for local networks" Under the profile specific settings.

The app from my vpn provider was pretty poor but the service was good and they provided open vpn set-up scripts - so I switched. You might check into that as an option if your app doesn't allow local pass-thru.

There are thousands of ways to configure a vpn. Are you connecting to a vpn server on your home lan? are you connecting to some 3rd party server to obfuscate your location? If connecting to the home lan, is it TAP or TUN?

Thanks for the help everyone. Sorry I don't have much experience with VPN's. The VPN is installed on the Android TV box that is running the SageTV mini client. The VPN is connecting to a 3rd party server. With the VPN turned off I can connect to the SageTV server using the server IP address. If the VPN is turned on the mini client cannot find the server. I'm using IPVanish and I don't see an option to bypass VPN for local networks. Is there a different way to input the IP address of the server in order for it to connect?

I was in that boat with my VPN provider. They added that local pass-thru option to theirs about a year ago -- before that, you couldn't do it -- you had to turn off the VPN. (Then I found other lackings and switched the app -- not the provider). I think that it may also be that my windows side also has a local pass-thru that allows it all to work.

Contact IPVanish and ask them how to configure your VPN(s) to allow what you want.

Exclamation Miniclient cannot connect over WiFi,can over Cat5

For some reason, I am unable to connect to SageTV with the Miniclient over Wifi using Windows, Android, and Amazon's verson of Android. I used to be able to, and I can with a Windows desktop over my wired connections. But they all use the same router, are trying to connect to the same URL. Is there some separate firewall for WiFi that is closed while the one for the wired connection is still open? I've got good strong signals in the rooms where I am trying to connect.
Any help will be appreciated.

Have you upgraded your router since it worked last? Some routers can be configured to keep wired and wireless networks separate for security reasons. You may want to check your router configuration.
