The Future of Directv - Satellite

It looks the end of DirectTV Satellite service is coming. Whether that's 2-3 years or longer remains to be seen. They are going to replace it with delivery over the internet. I have been a DirecTV customer for 22 years and have been using a pair of hdpvr's with component output for around 10 years. I have mixed feelings about it. On the good side I expect to be able to get better than 720p but I am confident their streaming box won't have component output and won't have an easy way to change channels. What that will mean for my Sage setup is unclear.

HaHa is that joke that not going happing as min of Satellite user can't get unlimited internet and sure in hell don't want Satellite Internet unless it there your lost resort

Just an example with ViaSat depending on your specific plan you order.
Bronze 12 (35 GB or 40 GB) $50

Then there HughesNet Satellite which is even a bigger joke.
1st Option (10 GB) $60
2nd Option (30 GB) $70
3rd Option (40 GB) $100
4th Option (50 GB) $130

No matter who you pick I recommend using only mobile device and keep off the video steaming.
And still have high latency

That is interesting for sure. I do think that at some point I'll be throwing the towel as well. I have 2 PVRs and Bell TV Satellite. I think once that dies or goes away, I'm not sure I have the energy to do something else

I currently watch about 50% of my TV via on demand streaming. I never watch live tv, so I could likely migrate to a pure on demand setup pretty easily.

Was a DirecTV customer since 1993. This week I called and canceled them. I am moving to YouTube TV and I am certain I won't miss the $120 per month DirecTV bill. I really wish there was a plugin that would allow you to record a streaming service like you do with a physical tuner. I have played with Play ON and can get it to work for some things but nothing like a physical tuner.

They make it very difficult to "record" their streams on purpose

Agreed, but I do wish I had a workaround. My sage environment in now OTA only.

I have been following the release of the SilconDust HDHomerun Premium TV. It has 45 channels and has everything I watch on DirectTV. My DirectTV bill is around $135 a month. From lurking on the SilconDust forums the quality is not there and the SilconDust acknowledges it and is working on improvements to the picture quality and adding 5.1 sound. The improvements will add H.265 which my understanding is Sage will be able to record from it but the HD300 extenders won't be able to play it back. But there are several alternatives I am looking at. If it actually happens then I could save around $100 a month!

The HDHomerun Premium TV service is actually quite good. They are having a few growing pains and rapidly learning about the world of streaming service, like some issue with losing the Hallmark channel this last week which has yet to be resolved. Although not stated yet, it seems like there may be some dispute going on there.

They're current h.264 video quality is roughly on par with my own HDPVR recordings at the highest quality I can force, which is impressive for compressing live TV on the fly. They appear to have a rather large following of customers whose devices won't play h.265, so when they make that change, it sounds like they hope to maintain both h.264 and h.265 streams for backwards compatibility. Best of all, with OpenDCT, it all works great in Sage, and it's only $35/month for 45 of [in my opinion] the best cable channels.

If you're a sports fan, maybe not so great, and of course you still have to grab your local TV via antenna.

The OTA antenna is in place with 6 digital tuners. That is not going away anytime soon. Sage TV has always covered me with the locals. I don't remember the last time I watched anything (Non Sports) Live and I always Comskip right through the commercials. Too bad I am an avid sports fan. That is why I went with YouTube TV. The only channel its missing, in my opinion, is the NFL network.
