java heap size maximum - how high?

I’m running Windows 7, 32 bit, with 4gb of ram.
What’s the maximum I can set the Java Heap Size to in regedit, 400?

Short answer: yes, 0x400 is the practical max.

But don't be surprised if Sage's System Information page shows the max java heap size is significantly less than 1 GB (0x400) on your system. That's because 32-bit Windows really only allows access to a max of approx 3.2 GB of memory (maybe less, depending on your video card and other hardware). The operating system itself, plus any other running programs (anti-virus, backup programs, etc etc), can consume a pretty significant amount of that 3.2GB. A peek at Windows Task Manager will provide some insight.

Thanks for confirming this. I’m not sure what takes more ram, the SageTV app itself, or the Service Mode app, so that’s something to consider for freeing up ram. I usually watch via the SageTV app on my server while I’m in that particular room, but maybe it’s time for putting a media extender in there instead and saving some ram.
