Phoenix Core Services 3.4.3 - new TV providers
This new version of the phoenix core/api now adds 2 TV providers giving you the following options...
  • tvdb - existing option that will likely be pulled by TVDB as its being replaced by them in favor of their subscription based v4 - see below. For now it continues to be free and mostly functional (missing access to banners and seems to provide less data/series). TVDB keep pushing out the cancellation date so not sure how long this will be available.
  • tvdb4 - new provider that supports TheTVDB.com latest api which is subscription based. To use this you must go to their site and register and pay for a user subscription ($11.99 annual USD) which will provide you with a PIN code. Once you have this then...
    • go to BMT, Configure, Phoenix, Fanart Options
    • change TV Metadata Provider(s) to tvdb4 (then click save)
    • go to BMT, Configure, Phoenix, TheTVDB4 Configuration
    • Enter your PIN in the TVDB4 API PIN field (then click save)
    • Note.. you can also put the pin in the sage.properties file directly with sage NOT running. For example
      • phoenix/metadata/tvdb4/pin=PINCODEFROMTVDB
  • tmdb - new provider to offer another free provider. The source data seems mostly current for newer shows and is fan supported if you want to get involved and update data. I did find a number of my test series to be lacking in source data but otherwise this is a good free option once the old tvdb provider goes away. To use this...
    • go to BMT, Configure, Phoenix, Fanart Options
    • change TV Metadata Provider(s) to tmdb (then click save)

Other changes...
  • Fix: Old TVDB provider should now work on Java 11
  • Fix: if Fanart is disabled (local and central), metadata will still be retrieved unless Automatic Fanart/Metadata is disabled. In this state, no fanart should be downloaded.

Note: you will need the latest version of BMT as well if you use BMT. I also tested the changes with CMT and everything seems to work fine.

This was a large effort so please let me know if anyone runs into any issues and I will work to resolve.

Does it matter which order we install the plugins in? Have had some issues with that in the past.

If you install the BMT update it will force the update of the others.

Nevermind, I had a typo in my pin because I transcribed it by hand into Sage... ugh. sorry!

Does TMDB have banners for TV shows? I just took a quick look and I don't see them. I use banners in my TV view so if they are not there that is an issue.

These subscriptions are starting to add up - we now have to pay for guide data and other metadata. Not a fortune, but it is starting to tick up.

well nuts, as I feared I updated (starting from BMT) and now the service crashes on startup. this is what happened last time these were updated.

I thought I had cleared up all the old Java components from the last round, but obviously something still isn't right. sigh. time to roll-back.

I do not believe TMDB does banners and I believe the old TVDB banners no longer download for new items.

And I agree on the comment on subscriptions, but at least SageTV users have the option now.

it never gets that far for any log, it just crashes. and unfortunately, I just tossed everything from the update.

but I did find a post from myself when this happened last time in Feb. when sagex-api was updated, that removing the "jetty/work" directory is what fixed it for me. maybe I'll try again tomorrow with this in mind.

By old TVDB banners you mean the old API? But banners do get downloaded with the new API?

Correct. In my testing the old TVDB api quit downloading banners many months ago and they do not seem to have fixed it and I would doubt they will.

In my testing of the new TVDB V4 api, it does download banners.

Perfect, thanks guys. I guess I will switch to the new API. I don't add a lot of TV series these days so I have manually downloaded banners. But I guess I will have to ante up for the new TVDB API soon.

Any update on when they shut down the old API for good?

Not that I have heard. The last announcement was that it would end in the first half of 2022...so they missed that but I have yet to see an update.

Follow-up. Updated again, BMT and then let it do the supporting plugins, shutdown service, cleaned jetty/work folder. Still crashes on start.

EDIT: am I seeing this right that the only things that are changing are these JARs:

and then a new "bmt.war" in webapps?

I'm trying to see if I there is any easy way to roll back and forth without copying GB's of data.

Do I need to do something with the webapps folder maybe?

EDIT: am I seeing this right that the only things that are changing are these JARs:

jaxws-api-2.3.1
sagex-api
phoenix
thetvdbapi-1.10

and then a new "bmt.war" in webapps?

I'm trying to see if I there is any easy way to roll back and forth without copying GB's of data.
There would also be some config files in stvs/phoenix that changed

I will review the logs later and see if I can find the issue

EDIT: am I seeing this right that the only things that are changing are these JARs:

jaxws-api-2.3.1
sagex-api
phoenix
thetvdbapi-1.10

and then a new "bmt.war" in webapps?

I'm trying to see if I there is any easy way to roll back and forth without copying GB's of data.
I completed my review. Notes...

- Jetty is starting Ok so I do not think it is Jetty related. I do see an old "servlet.jar" file in your JARs that could cause a conflict but I do not think it is. It would not hurt to rename this jar to avoid any issue.

- According to your logs, Sage just dies at the last part of the plugin installs and never starts the new version of phoenix. I noted a number of JARs that phoenix depends on were older on your system than on 2 of my test systems. I then noted that the MIN version stated in the plugin manifest had a too low version in it so if the old version existed on a system then it would not install the latest version which "may" be causing phoenix to fail.

To fix the above MIN version issue I have updated the manifests for bmt and phoenix to force it to use the latest jar versions for these dependencies. This could easily be the issue but we will not know until you try it out again.

The updated plugins have been published so the next time you try you will get the newer dependencies.
