Question Are you using the default STV (OriginalV2.stv) that comes with SageTV 2?

I'm looking to get a statistic on how many people are using customized STvs for SageTV. Thanks.

I don't use 2.0 yet so I don't have the option to use a STV. However, if I did use 2.0 I would use an another STV just to get access to a Watched Shows list. I believe this to be a basic function that should be in the OriginalV2.stv.

Posting this in the Customizations board may return a higher percentage of people using custom STVs than if it had been posted in General.

I'm still a fan of MalDude, using malore's menus... but I would like to find time soon to revisit what I'm using.

I'm guessing that any response on this forum will lean towards using a custom STV -- I don't know how many customers don't frequent the forum, but I would guess they would have a higher percentage still using the original STV.

Edit: The custom STVs have the benefit of all the capabilities of the original STV + added features, so for me it is a matter of _which_ custom STV to use rather than _whether_ to use a custom one.

I haven't used anything but the original STV because I thought that maybe this type of thing might be sort of beta and I didn't want to have any problems. My HTPC isn't really easy to configure because I don't really have a monitor - I just use the TV as a monitor when I really need to. I just leave my HTPC alone for the most part except for the times when I take it down to do some major work on it, which I don't do very often.

Are the custom STV's stable? Are they just kind of like skins? Or do they alter things in wiz.bin that could cause trouble? Is there a chance one of these STV's could accidentally change things in wiz.bin and cause me to lose all of my EPG data or anything like that - or worse yet lose some recordings? Can an STV be used on just the client?

I've followed the discussions on the various customized STV's, but it seems like most of the discussion is just questions and comments about the different features. So I would appreciate knowing everyone's experience using them in normal daily use.

I use both MlbDude2 and Neil 1.3 ... Both excellent ...

Are the custom STV's stable?

- For the most part. Some require a little tweaking, but worth every tweak.

Are they just kind of like skins?

- Yes, but in addition they provide some great additional functions.

Or do they alter things in wiz.bin that could cause trouble?

- Never has a wiz.bin issue and have tried MlbDude2, Malore, MalDude and Nielm.

Is there a chance one of these STV's could accidentally change things in wiz.bin and cause me to lose all of my EPG data or anything like that - or worse yet lose some recordings?

- Your EPG data is refreshed daily so should not be an issue anyway.

Can an STV be used on just the client?

- Yes, I use my client as my test system for a new STV ... I install it, tweak it to my liking and then migrate my changes to the server when satisfied.

** Keep in mind the satisfaction of doing this is partly the end result and partly doing the geeky stuff ... If you are more included to plug and play then you may just be satisfied with the end result. But I love the flexibility STV's provide, which should indicate what Studio will provide us all one day.

** Oh, what I do in my SageTV folder is create a "Backup of Original STV" folder and copy the files there. I then install an STV and set it up the way I like it, say MlbDude. Then I create a "Backup pf MlbDude STV" folder and copy those files there. If I want to switch around here and there I just delete the files under SageTV and copy either the Original or MlbDude files over. I actually do this for several STV's. It's flexible and if you mess up you can go back ... BTW, again I do this on my Client test box.

Enjoy ... T.

I think the original SageTV 2 skin is fine for the default install. Many people are happy with that interface starting off. I believe that there should be two or three skins to choose from when SageTV is installed. MLBDude2 would get my vote for one of those, and probably Malore's skin.

I'm currently using Neilm on my system, and so far it's gotten a very good WAF. Took a bit for her to get used to the menu changes, but she really likes the weather suite & especially likes the Commercial skip.

Now if someone could merge commercial skip into the library module, and it work on compressed files (from the divx/xvid compression option in Neilm), it'd be great. If I could get all her shows to re-compress in to Xvid, and still keep the ability to skip commercials automatically, she'd be happy, and my HD free space would definitely be happy .

That would be the ultimate STV, big WAF, and big JNF (Jealous Neighbor Factor)

For me I'm very happy with original SageTV 2 skin but do wish for a few thing in it.
1: Basic Weather
2: Watched Icon and Record Icon with in the Guide (Hard to tell with Italic Fonts)

But... isn't that true of everyone using a 'custom' STV? All the STVs are the same, but each one is just a little different.

Yes, at this point all the STV's are almost identical in look and feel. My MlbDude2 skin is a little different but not much.

I would love to see some that are radically different. Something like this maybe .
