SHS ...thanks for your in your face answer...
Gee, How come I did not think of that? Maybe I should do that right now. Sorry for the sarcasm but this is a forum where people exchange ideas even if it means it is about competition. I am a Sage user and for most part happy with it but at the same time I don't develop fanatic loyalty to one particular product. The bottom line is everyone wants better and improved products. I see a boat load of comments on Beyond TV, Meedio, and MCE 2005.. how come you don't try to kill the thread for them so quickly? If you know something about the product and have used it ... then say something useful. Otherwise let other people share their thoughts. The reason I like this particular forum and check on it regularly (beside the fact that I have Sage) is that most people here are really helpful more knowledgeable and most seem to have used or concurrently use other products. |

TVedia has come up a number of times here already, especially in the Xcard threads.

I know little about this program, just went and looked at it.
From this screenshot it appears they place the progress bar SMACK in the middle of the screen. My god that is stupid and annoying, does not speak well for the rest of the product if they can not grasp why this is a bad thing. Course I have not used it, but from that I would probably not even try it. http://www.8dim.com/img/screens/tvpause.jpg |

I used it back when it was JovePlayer and honestly it has gotten worse since it has been TVedia and I think it is a stretch to call it a PVR product. I just downloaded it a couple of weeks ago to see how it worked with the XCard and thought about maybe setting asside one PVR 250 for it to be able to watch DVDs and TV on my projector via the XCard.
Pros: - 100% Perfect support for the XCard ( DVD/DIVX/MPEG2 ) with OSD, support for all features of the card including real time contrast / Color / Brightness. - With XCard runs on a slower PC ( P3 733 Mhz with 256 MB ) Cons: - Poor User Interface and remote behvior (They designed the available commands and behavior around the XCard remote which is very bad as a PVR remote. Even 2 years ago when it was JovePlayer I used my ATI remote wonder). - Difficult to set up EPG (Uses XMLTV) which is unacceptable for the US market when they are asking the same price as SageTV and BeyondTV which both have free guide Data that is very easy to setup. - PVR functionality is not very intuitive - Scheduling recordings without EPG is not very intuitive. Just seems unpolished. To be completely honest if you are thinking about this, instead get GBPVR as it has ok support for the XCard but has the option of using Zap2It listing in the US Market and also supports the MediaMVP for clients. Oh yeah and it is free and supported pretty well. For Commercial products I would stick to SageTV or BeyondTV since for the money you get a much more mature products. PCAlchemy has licences for both that are less than from their respective websites - within a few dollars of the TVedia price. Just my Opion. John |

Thanks "jptaz".. that's exactly what I was looking for. That is the reason I come to this forum often. An unbiased and helpful opinion on the greater issues.
I guess then as of right now it really comes down to Sage vs MCE. I am rooting for Sage... but as the past experience has shown, once MS sets its eyes on something, it becomes very tenacious. The way they have dealt with rival products has been to kill them through a price war by making their product more compelling economically, refining the product over time without much worry about short-term loss, and eventually marginalizing the competition or just buying out the competition altogether (I would not be surprised if Sage takes off real big and MS makes an offer to buy it out) |

I for one welcome these threads and encourage them by all means..
Anyways, the best way to gain experience with other programs is by sampling them.. I've installed TVedia and did not like it as much as Sage, i don't remember specifics.. Pretty much, if sage was able to copy the osd the way GBPvr does on overlay, sage would be the perfect choice... Jeff |
