Sorry didn't mean to imply that it might help your problem. With the sync getting farther out as it goes on seems to imply that there may be a framerate issue. The smi captions are displayed on a time basis so if the framerate at playback is different from the source of the subtitles then it will get progressively out of sync.

Do they start in sync when played in SageTV?

What's the format of the video files?

John

they are divx running 29.9 fps. They are in sync with all other players I have and even opening up the sami and compairing the times they match up. When I open them up in sage it starts about 2 seconds too late and after 5 min it is 45 seconds too late and after 15 min the are up to 4 min too late so I know it is not the sami file that has the wrong timing. Not sure what to do now.

That's looks very much like the difference between film and video framerates 24fps vs 30fps.

I don't actually use captions at all, but maybe someone like ke6guj, who actually uses them regularly might be able to help.

hmm, sound like a difference in framerates to me too.

how can you tell the time in a .smi file? All the one I have look like this,
Quote:
<BODY>
<SYNC Start=113530><P Class=UNKNOWNCC>
Have a try at it.
<SYNC Start=115259><P Class=UNKNOWNCC>&nbsp;
<SYNC Start=123106><P Class=UNKNOWNCC>
Coo, governor, that was a slide.
which is frame numbers instead of timestamping. .srt files show the time code. That's why when I was messing around with ccextractor to help test, I was creating the .srt and .smi files, so that I could easily look at the time code in the .srt file to see where the timing was going off.

The only thing I could think of is to run the video and .smi file in subtitle workshop and see if it lines up in there. With it, you can adjust stuff like the framerate to see if it helps, or else do a resync in subtitle workshop.

Seeing as there hasn't been any problems reported I've made the test version 1.1.3 the current download.

(1.1.3)
- Fix reloading of smi files

Added a test version to the first post which allows toggling of Captions on/off via a key defined as Custom3.

Tried it out and it seems to only trigger .smi captioning, not the built-in captions. CC on Mute is set to both, and does work correctly.

OK, more testing. If I have CC enabled via manual setting or muted, I can disable CC with Custom3, but doesn't enable. Looking at the logs, I see CCState = false on every keypress on an embedded CC and alternating true/false on .smi'd CC.

Thanks Jack. I've replaced the download on the first post. It works for me, but needs some real world testing.

Still get the same behavior, I can turn off CC but not turn it on.

Get this every time I hit Custom3,
Tue 8/14 11:14:31.841 CCState = false Caption State = Off
Tue 8/14 11:14:33.468 CCState = false Caption State = Off

Unless I have CC on first, then I hit custom3 to turn off the CC and I get this.
Tue 8/14 11:16:17.887 CCState = false Caption State = CC1

OOPs, looks like .smi got affected as well.

I hit Custom3 and get no captioning now.
Tue 8/14 11:20:29.342 CCState = true Caption State = Off
Tue 8/14 11:20:29.738 CCState = false Caption State = Off

Actually it appears that all the triggering for .smi captioning works correctly, but it just doesn't display on the screen. The Options pop-up shows the captioning enabling and disabling, but no display of the captions.

Jack, thanks once more for your testing. I've simplified the code (less is more) and updated the download on the first post.

You're welcome for the testing, and Thank You for working on the imports.

I tried 1.15b3 and it looks like .smi is back to normal, but CC still have the same issue as before. Custom3 will turn off CC but not turn it on.

Both work OK on my system. Are you importing it into a clean STV or are you importing it over the top of any existing one?

Always imported into a clean STV with no caption_playback code. Was importing iwth all other imports at same time, then was importing by itself to test.

Was testing in SageMC 6.3.3c, so I just tried the default STV, same deal. Any special settings I'm possibly missing? I have "captions on mute" enabled and "preferred captions" to both.

You seem to know a lot about closed caption and my closed caption works fine on PVR-500 and I wanted to ask if it possible to have SageTV record the overlay caption into the mpeg video file so no srt or smi is needed to view the caption?

I am trying to see if this is possible where captions are recorded as part of a video so I would be able to use any portable mpeg player that does not support caption or subtitles to enjoy my recorded shows "open caption" instead of closed caption.

Thank you
Bill

Ok, I can get it to fail. But don't have time to fix it at the moment.
A workaround is
Disable "Captions on Mute"
Enable "Embedded Captions"
Enable "Captions on Mute"

I can't even remember why I have those settings only displayed when Captions on Mute is disabled, but I should get a chance to fix it up before the weekend.

OK, got it fixed up.

I had already disabled "captions on mute" and enabled/disabled "external captions (.smi)" and "embedded captions". Didn't make a difference. What did was changing "preferred captions" to "Embedded". Custom3 and "CC on mute" then only work for CC, and not .smi, but .smi can still be enabled via the options menu. It works good enough for now.

Thanks

Jack,

When the CC is enabled and disabled, does it reload the .smi file by any chance?

Thanks!

I just tried to swap out an .smi file while currently displaying .smi captioning and then stopping and re-starting the captioning. Still displayed the original .smi file.
