The issue:

Several times, my cable set top box has powered off during the night. This has led to black screen recordings. A secondary problem is that sometimes when the stb is powered off, the stb volume gets defaulted to 15, which is way too low, as optimal volume is 26 out of 30. There are a few settings on the STB regarding power and volume, but they proved more problematic than helpful.


feature / plugin solution:

SageTV can do a channel scan, so it does have the ability to detect signal. 2 or 3 minutes before a recording, SageTV could scan the channel about to be recorded. If no signal (or black screen), it could check another couple of channels, and if no signal on them also, then send a set of commands (on the blaster, serial, firewire, etc) like - power, volume, channel, etc - and then rerun the scan routine x number of times before failing. Failing could have an option for emailing/messaging.
