HD on Linux

So, I have been thinking about going to Linux on my rebuild of my Sage server, for a couple of reasons (mainly because buying a copy of Sage Linux is cheaper than buying another copy of Windows XP or Vista). I know that sage states the Hauppauge cards are supported, but are there any other cards supported? If there are linux drivers, can I run other capture cards? Also, what about HD cards? Anyone having any luck capturing from HD? It sounds like it is still a crap shoot as far as HD on linux. I will only be using as a server and not playing anything on the linux box. What about transcoding for MVP use (HD to SD on the fly)? I know it is OEM only and only a small sect of the population uses it, so that is why I am reaching out to all of you, before I make the plunge.

You should be able to use any ota HD or clear qam tuner card that is compatible with linux. I have been using an avermedia a180. Depending on the card you use you might need to use a more recent linux kernel.

Transcoding is the same in both windows and linux. You will need a recent processor to be able to convert hd to sd.
