Mac Client Service

I'm trying out the Mac Sage Client, and when it first starts, it says:

"Installation/Upgrade Needed: Some items need to be installed to run the SageTV service. You will need administrator privileges to install these items."

I'm trying this out strictly as a "client" - the SageTV server is running downstairs on a Linux box.

So what does the "SageTV service" install do, and do I really need it if I'm really only running this as a Client?

Client mode requires most of the same files that the server requires so we run the installer for both. I'll make a note and change the wording so it's less confusing

So what is it actually "installing"? Was it just expanding stuff into the Sage Client.app directory, or installing something elsewhere?

I love the Mac's super simple "drag and drop" install that many apps use, but if stuff needs to be done post-install, did you consider using a .pkg instead? If you are just expanding files (to save bandwidth on downloads?), wouldn't compressing the .dmg achieve the same ends?

Not criticizing - just curious,

Support files and tools, most of which go into /Library/Application Support/SageTV (feel free to take a look!) along with the System Preferences pane. The user interface is customizable and stored in Data/STVs in the app support directory (even for the client app), we wouldn't want you to have to redo everything if you upgraded, so it lives in a common place.

So why do I get that message (Installation/Upgrade needed) every time I start the client on my Mac?
Tried uninstalling/Re-installing with no effect.

If I just press Cancel, it goes on and loads OK, but it didn't do this until I installed a newer version.

have you allowed it to install what it needs to?

since you downloaded the new version, it is probably trying to update some of the files, so it still works with the old ones which is why you can cancel and use the client.

I guess I should have said so, but yes, several times I have let it install the files it needs, it still persists in asking each time it's launched.

are you running Snow Leopard (10.6)? This is the same symptom that I had when I installed the Mac Sage Server on 10.6. I had to revert to 10.5. I don't have any Linux in my environment so perhaps it is coincidental that the symptoms are the same.

I am running Snow Leopard. Right now it's just an annoyance, I'll hit "Cancel" and move on rather than go back an OS version....

Thanks. Hopefully a new update will solve it....

This sounds like the problem that an earlier version of SageTV had with Snow Leopard as 10.6 does not store a package receipt. The fix for that was to launch Terminal and type the following to purge the installer receipt:

sudo pkgutil --forget tv.sage.service.SageTV

The Mac version of Sage for Snow leopard is 6.6.2 which fixes the reinstallation bug. However the latest download from the downloads page for some reason has not been updated from the 6.6.1 version. Get the latest 6.6.2 version from the links here http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44611
