Smile Post your Favorite Online Service Feeds!! (v6)

Hi All,

With the release of the HD extender/Sage 6.3 and the increasing number of high-quality video podcasts, I'm finding fewer reasons to use Juice to download rss feeds to my media server.

I finally broke the code on how to add new rss feeds to the Online Services section of Sage and thought I'd post some of my favorite feeds. Below are some of the feeds I've added to the two online services property files.

OnlineVideoUIText.properties

ok..having a problem...

I tried using this to add some Audio only podcasts. They seemed to add fine and the podcast icons came up fine. But when I press the icon to play, it started buffereing, then came back and gave me an exception error and said problem playing video portion... So, since these are audio only, there is no video...so, I must be confussed how the online videos work... (I hoped they would play audio only feeds...also)...I noticed the security now, say (audio only) and it is audio only...help..please...

Thanks for any help...

This seems to work just fine ... I have successfully added items to the existing categories.

Can someone tell me how to add a new menu item/button to the OnLine services page or perhaps how to remove buttons from some, but not all the clients/extenders.

for the kids extender/PC Client .. I would like to remove some of the podcast, but for my extender and client I would like to have all items displayed

You can use Nielm's dynamic menus and a MenuItemLet I put together as a guide to making your own menu. Link

Can I get one of you to do me a favor....please load the following into your online videos and see if you get sound through the HD extender....It is audio only. It is from my pastor at our church's radio podcast. I get a timeline with all zero's and then no audio...It works on my server....

Videolinks:

wisdomfortheheart/URLContext=http://podcast.oneplace.com/Wisdom_For_The_Heart/3193631.xml

Thanks..I just need to see if somebody else can make it work, if so, or not, then I can go from there..

Adding Custom Categories and Podcast Feeds to the Online Services Menu.

The buttons in the online services menu are (mostly) dependent on 2 new properties files which Sage reads every time you enter the menu. These 2 files are called "OnlineVideoLinks.properties" and "OnlineVideoUIText.properties."

The stock STV for version 6.3.5 has the path to the properties file hard-coded, so you can't just make a 2nd copy of the files and tell each client to use a different file. However, the path is relative to the STV path. It looks for a folder called "OnlineVideos" in the same folder where the current STV is located.

The default location for the stock STV is:
C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\SageTV3
so, it will look for the properties file in:
C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\SageTV3\OnlineVideos

If you copy the whole SageTV3 folder and call it something different like:
C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\Client2
and then tell one client to use the STV in that folder, you should be able to modify the properties files for that client independant of the other.

Now, here are some more details about modifying the properties files:

The stock STV creates the Online Services Folder by reading the OnlineVideoLinks.properties file and creating a list. It puts the first 2 categories it finds in the list (it expects these to be Google and YouTube). It will skip these if the property in the Sage Client Properties file called "ui/GoogleVideo/AllowAccess" is FALSE. Then it adds the Weather item. Then it adds the rest of the categories if finds in the OnlineVideoLinks.properties file, then it adds the TV Editorials item. Then it adds a Placeshifter item if you are running Linux. Then it adds the Back item. It then uses this list to create the buttons on the screen. It is currently hard-coded to use 3 columns by 5 rows.

If you look through the OnlineVideoLinks.properties file, you will see the following lines near the top of the file:

Code:
# Define the online videos sources. These items will be listed on the
# Online Services menu in the order they are listed here. Note that these
# values double as the OnlineVideoType code in the STV.
Sources=xYouTube,xGoogle,xPodcastNews,xPodcastComedy,xPodcastSports,xPodcastScienceTech,xPodcastEntertainment,xPodcastHD,xPodcastFamily,xPodcastHomeGarden
This defines the Category names. You can create additional categories by adding them to this list. The categories will appear in the order they are shown in this list (but I think you need to keep YouTube and Google as the 1st 2 entries).

After that, the top half of the file defines all of the Google and YouTube sub-categories. Then you will see a section that looks like this:

Code:
# ============================================================
# Define the xPodcasts Podcast source categories
# ============================================================
#
xPodcastHD/Categories=xHiddenUniverseHD,BeautifulPlacesinHD,HDYosemitewithTonyFarley,ComedyInsider,Diggnation,HubblecastHD,HubblecastFullHD,WashtingtonPostHD,NASACastVideo,
You can add new PodCast entries to an existing category by just adding a name. If you are creating a new category, just follow the format of the HD Podcast category above: put the catgegory name, followed by "/Categories=" followed by the list of podcasts, separated by commas.

Immediately after that section you will see:

#Define the xPodcasts categories
#
# xDiscovery
xDiscovery/URLContext=http://www.discovery.com/radio/xml/discovery_video.xml

Add your new podcasts to the end of this list following the format above for Discovery: put the podcast name, followed by "/URLContext=", followed by the path to the RSS feed for the podcast.

Now the names for the categories and podcasts that we have been using so far are not the actual text that will be displayed on the buttons in the STV. For example, the xPodCastHD category shown above actually appears as "HD Videos" in the STV. The text for the categories and podcasts gets defined in the second properties file "OnlineVideoUIText.properties. If you look in this file, near the top you will see:

# ======================================================================
# Create the menu items for the Online Services menu:
# ======================================================================
Source/xYouTube/LongName=YouTube
Source/xYouTube/ShortName=YouTube

There will be 2 lines like this for each category. If you created a new category, add 2 lines like this for it. Substitute the "xYouTube" with the category name you used in the other properties file and put whatever text you want on the right of the "=". I am not sure what the difference between LongName and ShortName is, but you can make them both the same.

After this, the subcategories for Google and YouTube are defined. About 1/4 of the way down, you will see the following lines:

#
# ======================================================================
# Create the category names for xPodcasts:
# ======================================================================
#
Category/xDiscovery/ThumbURL=http://www.discovery.com/radio/gallery/discovery_video.jpg
Category/xDiscovery/LongName=Discovery Channel
Category/xDiscovery/ShortName=Discovery

This is where you define the name and thumbnail to be displayed on the buttons for the individual PodCast Feeds. Each feed has 3 lines, so just add the 3 lines for each of your new feeds to the end of this list. If you don't have a path for the thumbnail, you can omit the 1st line.

I hope people find this helpful.

Thanks Tiki,

Could you do me a favor and go up one response and try the podcast settings I have listed and see if you get Audio. I am trying to see if it's my settings or if something else is wrong. I don't get audio on any that I add that are audio only. The video podcasts seem to work fine for me..Just tell me if the settings play audio for you...Please..

BTW: You can submit links to include with SageTV here -- all I really need is a brief description of what the link is for and the link itself:

SomeLinkName/URLContext=<URL link here>

My version automatically generates the thumb and titles for possible further editing.

Of course, there is no guarantee we will include the links in the default setup.

----
Note that if you customize your own online video properties files, be sure to keep a backup copy because the next installation will overwrite your changes.

----
garyellis: SageTV doesn't seem to handle your link's audio format very well. You can try submitting it as a problem to SageTV; it may or may not be fixable.
