Remote Server Question

Ok, so I know I'm not the only person out there with a SageTV Server that isn't connected to a tv directly. My question is this, for those of you that have this same setup, how do you access your machine remotely? I tried PcAnywhere, but it's not working right for some reason. I can do anything but access sage (the menu doesn't refresh and such......) I just started using the Web Interface, so that helps, but I'd like to be able to access it occasionally from the actual machine.

What OS is your server? If it is XP Pro or MCE, you should be able to Remote Desktop into it.

i just use remote desktop. i recently enable the concurrent sessions hack so that i don't always have to interrupt the sage UI session on the TV but if you aren't using any display at all, then you presumably have no UI to interrupt. i have display problems when i remote in, but if i close the UI and reopen it, it seems to work ok

If I were running a windows server, I would use copssh and tunnel remote desktop over it.

I use remote desktop accessing windows headless server. I had to upgrade the Java to JRE 1.6u3 otherwise the whole Sage UI was unreadable.

Placeshifter or SageTVClient for administering Sage; Remote Desktop for just about everything else. (When Remote Desktop first became available, I happily uninstalled PCAnywhere from all my machines and never looked back.)

One thing you may find useful is that you can start and stop services on a remote machine using Administrative Tools > Services > Action > Connect to another computer. If you plan to do this a lot, you can set up a custom MMC session as follows:

Run mmc.exe.
Choose File > Add/Remove Snap-in... from the menu.
Click Add...
Choose Services from the list and click Add.
Select the "Another computer" radio button, enter the name of your Sage server, and click Finish.
Click Close.
Click OK.
Choose File > Save from the menu to save the customized session to disk.

Now you can use that saved session to connect directly to the server's Services console without going through the Connect dialog every time.

I use ultra vnc (http://www.ultravnc.com) though any of the vnc variants would work as well. I use vnc rather than rdp mainly because my server does have a tv/projector connected and I would rather not kill off/lock the session.

I use RDP, Neilm's webserver, SageClient, and remote MMC sessions to administer the OS and SageTV on my headless server.

I ran my server headless for a long time using UltraVnc. It works great. I now have a monitor connected to the server but I still use UltraVnc a lot from my den computer.

Actually I have had this to happen to me also. Usually changing the video hook settings or rebooting will fix this. I doesn't happen often and I have never been sure exactly what caused it.

VNC Bay-Bee!

UltraVNC to be exact. I've also disabled the video hook driver which I'm assuming has given me hassle free use.

If you opt for the RDP concurrent sessions hack you can log in as a different user (My Tv session runs as 'tv' user) and not ever interrupt whats seen on the screen at all. My server is permanently plugged into my TV only and I rarely see the underlying desktop
